DIANE LEMIEUX is a Canadian writer and journalist based in the Netherlands. Born in Quebec into a diplomatic family, she traveled widely in her childhood. She has a BA in Communication from the University of Ottawa, an MA in Development Studies from Leeds University, and a post-graduate diploma in International Relations from Amsterdam University. She has lived and worked in seven countries around the world. Diane specializes in intercultural communication, national diversity, and expatriate issues, and has written extensively on these subjects for professional journals, newspapers, and the Dutch Government.

Errors and Stereotypical

I bought this book for a friend who is moving to Canada soon. My main reason for buying it was that the language level looked low enough for a non-native English speaker.

At first glance, the book seems to be a good basic guide. It covers a wide variety of topics which make it a good general book. However; the book is poorly written and has quite a few grammatical and factual errors. It also seems to be written from a Canadian rather than an "outsider" because much of her claims are common Canadian misunderstandings. For example, she claims that Canada has a "strict separation between Church and state." While the US has the separation, Canada does not. In fact, several provinces fund religious schooling and many of the legislatures in the country, including the Federal Government, start their sessions with a prayer. This is hardly a strict separation. Elsewhere in the book, she also claims that BC tolerates "weed smoking" - another common misconception.

The book does a good job describing life in Central Canada (Ontario and Quebec). Much of the book provides examples of life, slang and issues that arise from this region. However; the author appears to have little experience with other regions in the country. Her description of the North and the Western regions are either stereotypical or in error. One simple example is her list of provincial capitals: two of the three "prairie provinces" are wrong.

If you are looking for a book on Canadian culture, this one will provide you with a very basic understanding. I am sure that better ones exist.

This is a good introduction to Canada. It is "just enough" for the casual visitor or a good starting point for someone who wishes to do more in-depth study. I found the section on government particularly interesting.

recommended reading

I loved this 2nd book. It continued with the story well, is clean (no gratuitous sex, flesh, language, violence), and enjoyable. You do, however, need to read the first book, Mirrors, to really keep a grip on the story.

Good, but not as good as the first

As is so often the truth, the sequel does not quite live up to the original. Yes, the characters are all there and it had great moments. But to me the whole first 1/3 of the book was really slow. It seemed like people just hanging out and eating. And giggling, Oh, and eating again... It did pick up later on. It may have even picked up a little too much. Right now I have 2 very little children and am more than a little sleep deprived. When I have a rare, free moment, I am looking for an easy read. I thought the first book did that. But, without spoiling anything, there is a lot more jumping around in this one. The characters are back and forth in time and making changes that affect things later on in the story. Later becomes earlier, earlier becomes later. There were a few times where I got lost in the whole time travel aspect and just didn't have the brain power left to figure it all out. That being said, I will still buy the third book to see what happens!

Best read in a long time!!

I'm so happy to have found this Trilogy. Time did not have the second book slump that most books have. You find out SO much about Grace's familys' past and the history of the mirror. We also finally meet Chris!! Who I couldn't decided if I hated or not. I love the evolution of Graces' character. We see her battle with the light and dark within in her a direct result of all the obstacles thrown at her. After finishing this book I IMMEDIATELY dived into book 3...I'm dying to know how it ends but also never want it to end.

Beginner Friendly

Murach's HTML, XHTML, and CSS is an excellent introductory book for beginner programmers, and somewhat useful as a remedial work for intermediate ones like me.

PROS
---------------
+ Starts with the basics and explains them well
+ Works systematically to develop skills
+ Covers all of the major stuff you need for building a web-site
+ Teaches good practices
+ Well-organized

CONS
---------------
- Never moves to the intermediate level; I couldn't do more than just refresh basic skills (some of which were pretty rusty)
- I was hoping for more reference tables and the like--this is good for reading one time, but not for re-visiting

SUMMARY

This book is best read by beginners. I wish I would have had it when I was starting out. Intermediate and advanced programmers ought to look elsewhere. This series seems to have a lot of other computer programming books for more advanced work. Hopefully, they are as well-written as this one.

Excellent for beginners!

20-30 pages each (short & sweet writing).
"Paired pages", the Murach trademark (left page: explanation / right page: examples, brief descriptions, key points).
Fast and novice-friendly read.
Easily finish the book in a week (two chapters a day).
Two weeks if you take your time (one chapter a day).

Beginners:
Recommend one chapter a day, take your time.
Familiarize yourself with the syntax and tools. Key point: fully grasp the fundamental concepts.

Intermediate:
Good, fast refresher (2+ chapters a day).
Experienced with HTML but new to CSS and/or XHTML.

Advanced:
This book will probably bore you.
If you're already web development savvy and looking to beef up your skills, this book is not for you.

My tip:
The book recommends using Notepad++ for Windows users.
I suggest using Microsoft's Visual Web Developer Express as well (both are free).
Reasons being:
FORMAT DOCUMENT function: keep your code clean, structured, and easier to examine.
REAL-TIME VALIDATION: instead of validating through W3C website after coding to find errors.
Easy introduction to using an IDE while learning coding at the same time.
** note: you'll get a warning using W3C's website validation because VWD encodes the file in UTF-8 with BOM,
you can open the file in Notepad++ when your finished and convert it to UTF-8 without BOM to pass the W3C validation.

After completion:
I highly recommend Murach's Javascript and DOM Scripting.

A comparison to the Head First book.

I'm not going to rehash what others are saying about this book. I just want to add my two cents. I've read the Head First HTML book, which is a very good start, but a lot of the things that are covered in this book (like working with mobile devices, how to format just about anything using CSS, and working with audio and video) are missing in the Head First book because this one came out in 2010, while the Head First book hasn't been updated since 2006. The other thing I like about this book is that the full explanation comes before the exercises. That way, you can read the material on the go without having to have a computer next to you. Then, you can use your computer when doing the exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises are very important and help a great deal. Instead of telling you everything to do, they give you a chance to figure things out yourself. IMHO, that's the best way to learn. I also liked the tone of this book. To me, it seems that Head First treats you like a 12 year old, while this one talks to you like you're an adult. One last thing I'd like to mention is that I learned more about forms, tables, and CSS by reading this one.

About the Author
Scott DeVeaux is a nationally recognized jazz scholar whose 1997 book The Birth of Bebop: A Social and Musical History won the American Book Award, an ASCAP–Deems Taylor Award, the Otto Kinkeldey Award from the American Musicological Society, and the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Sound Research. He has taught jazz history at the University of Virginia for more than 25 years.

Gary Giddins is the Executive Director of the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the City University of New York. He was the Village Voice jazz columnist for over 30 years and remains a preeminent jazz critic who received the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award, and the Bell Atlantic Award for Visions of Jazz: The First Century in 1998. His other books include Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams: The Early Years, 1903–1940, which won the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award and the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Sound Research; Weatherbird: Jazz at the Dawn of Its Second Century; Faces in the Crowd; Natural Selection; Warning Shadows; and biographies of Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. He has won an unparalleled six ASCAP–Deems Taylor Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Peabody Award in Broadcasting.

A continuation of Gunther Schulller's work

I've always been disappointed that Gunther Schuller never extended his series of excellent works analyzing jazz history: "Early Jazz: Its Roots and Musical Development" (first edition 1968, 400+ pages) and more than 20 years later "The Swing Era: The Development of Jazz, 1930-1945" (1991, 940 pages). These seminal works go into extensive detail with plenty of musical notation to illustrate points yet they have appeal at all levels. I desperately wanted him to move on to my favorite periods, all after 1945. But this hasn't happened yet, and I suspect it may not.

Now Giddens and Deveaus have done so. True, their analysis is not as detailed as Schuller's, but they're covering a lot more territory. Besides, such a book would be thousands of pages long. They found the right level of depth for this treatment at this length.

I've been listening to (and reading about) jazz for 40 years, and this is the best overview covering all the periods that I've ever seen. I learned lots of interesting things, and it will help anyone except probably a professional jazz musician to put all the pieces and trends into perspective.

The use of technology with the downloadable applet from the book publisher (no charge) that works with the related series of CDs is also quite interesting. It's nice to have the screen pop up with an explanation of what's happening just as it is happening so you don't have to constantly refer to the book to get the description or compare the minute:second in the book with what's on your file player.

Given this, I do recommend also purchasing the CD set. No, it's not cheap, and you could probably find most of the cuts somewhere else -- but it would take a great deal of effort (something I had to do as far as I could with the Schuller books). And while the CD set contains a large number of songs I already have in my collection, I would miss not having those few that he also describes. Besides, the cuts on the CD are designed to interface directly to the free applet.

Summary: The book/CD set is one of the best jazz investments I've ever made. It has brought me immense enjoyment, and it's something I know I'll go back to again and again. I suspect this will become the standard resource of jazz history for many years to come.

THOUGHTFUL AND WELL NEEDED

Jazz scholar Scott DeVeaux and premiere jazz critic Gary Giddins (The Village Voice) compiled this four-CD collection to accompany their advanced level jazz primer, Jazz (2009). At $60.07 from Amazon.com, it's pricey but worth it for the serious jazz listener or student of jazz. I could cavil at some of the choices they made: I would have preferred less pop jazz, for instance. (Nothing against Sinatra or Getz and Byrd's "Samba Dees Days," for instance, but there are other pieces and other musicians I'd like to hear. And while Horace Silver's hard bop quintet deserves to be spotlighted, so do Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: what about the 1958 quintet -Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons, etc., what a group!--doing "Moanin'"?) In some cases, I would have preferred different selections by the musicians or different groups being spotlighted. From the twenties, I'd like to have heard one of violinist Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang's hot jazz groups from Chicago, or maybe Adrian Rollini. And there is a great 30s pickup group with trombonist Jack Teagarden and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. (The same album has another group with clarinetist Peewee Russell playing with James P. Johnson on piano and Zutty Singleton on drums!) On the modern end, I missed hearing a cut by Roscoe Mitchell or the full Art Ensemble of Chicago, ditto the World Saxophone Quartet or ROVA. The jazz-fusion group Weather Report was good, but I feel that John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra blew them out of the water when they were hitting it. But this is small potatoes for a collection that is both generally representative and singularly informative.

Most of the cuts on the first CD are stunning: Ghanaian drummers, a black Baptist or Pentecostal choir, killer guitar and vocal by oldtime bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell, a piece by ragtime's little know clarinet virtuoso Henry Sweetman, great King Oliver and Louis, and Louis on his own and with Earl Fatha Hines. The second CD, which takes the music up through the 30s, is equally good. Hell, it's all good!

Each of the selections is pegged off an analysis of the performance in DeVeaux's and Giddin's book. The analyses are not uniform in quality -some seem close to trivial--but over all, reading along in the text while listening to the musical cuts will teach the reader/listener a great deal. Hurrah for you, Scott and Gary! Something like this has been needed for a long time.

Essential for all students of jazz

The recordings on these four CD's relate to examples in the book Jazz by DeVaux and Giddins and are an essential accompaniment to that book. The authors have chosen the best musical examples they can find to illustrate the history and styles of jazz during its development. The music is reproduced in brilliant sound on the CD and if downloaded can be used interactively with a tutorial on the Norton website. Whatever your starting point you will learn a lot from these works.

This is an inspiring and quick read. Incredible, and Inspirational Book

This book couldn't have been more perfect for me to read at this moment in my life, as I am going through so many changes. I truly enjoyed reading everyone's touching stories and it's nice to know that I'm not alone in my struggles and that eventually things get better and work out as long as you're willing to put in some serious thought and hard work into your dreams and aspirations. This book was a quick read as well, and just what I needed to put my mind into deep thought at the end of the day, I highly recommend this book, it will inspire you!

What I really enjoyed was the variety. Each chapter is written by a different author and thus they bring their own unique story and perspective. What an encouragement to be reminded that each one of us is unique and valuable and with focused purpose and effort, we can strive to live that out day by day.
