About the Author
J.N. Jim Whiddon, who has spent much of his career in the financial services industry, has owned and operated his own companies for more than thirty years. He hosted his own radio show for five years, including a stint with CNN Headline News in Dallas. He also has been often interviewed and quoted by national media outlets such as Fortune magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and CNBC. Whiddon founded The Old School in 2014 with a mission of conveying timeless tools of interpersonal communication and wisdom to make life-long leaders among students, professionals, and mentors alike. With this goal in mind, he wrote The Old School Advantage, which is his fourth book. He prepared for it by reading more than four hundred other books for the purpose of research. His other published works are There for the Taking, Wealth Without Worry, and The Investing Revolutionaries. He earned his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and a master of science from The American College in Philadelphia. Whiddon is involved in his local church, enjoys playing guitar, and loves all sports. He lives in Dallas with his wife, Nizie. They have four children, ages sixteen to twenty-three.

You'll be glad you did

In a day when the catchword "progressive" seems to imply improvement of antiquated ways of doing things, Jim Whiddon's book brings a breath of fresh awareness of the reliability of "timeless" truths. Whether we talk of Progressive Insurance or progressive politics in view, there's nothing new under the sun. This book demonstrates that old school principles are not worn out, old fashioned disposable views. Those principles that are timeless are reliable threads of wisdom that we do well to embrace and incorporate into our lifestyles and world view. This book is enjoyable to read, stimulating to discuss, and gratifying to put into practice. Buy it, read it, discuss it and apply it. You'll be glad you did.

Skills to stand out in a crowd

As a person who interviews many people for roles in our organization, I wish every interviewee would read and heed this book. "The Old School Advantage" will help young adults build skills that our culture seems to have left behind. Whether it's communicating with the superficiality of texting, or punctuating each thought with "cool" or "like" or "awesome," or answering a question with the shallowness of a Facebook post, the simple and clear antidotes are in this book. A must have resource!

Probably the best energy efficiency book I've ever bought. Liked the third edition so much last spring and bought it then, even though I knew the 4th edition was coming out in the fall (and I bought it too). Clear, beautifully illustrated with great explanations of sometimes more complex topics. A great reference for not only architects, but engineers also (like me). A must have for anyone interested in sustainable design.

A Decent Primer

This is a decent undergraduate level resource. It is a functional primer on many of the basics of sustainability including shading principles and heat transfer. The author encourages an improved understanding of many natural principles which were neglected in twentieth century building design. Interestingly, I have no desire to live in an elevated Japanese paper house in the hot humid climate of Chicago, and see a great deal of merit in mechanical cooling in hot humid climates. Never the less I think its a laudable goal for many of us to come to terms with these "natural" ways of dealing with climate.

Excellent Addition to Elite Series

Finland at War 1939-45, # 141 in Osprey's Elite series, is an excellent introduction to the role of the Finnish Army in the Second World War. Authors Philip Jowett and Brent Snodgrass demonstrate a firm grip of this subject and provide a wealth of useful and hard-to-find information on the Finns. This volume belongs on the bookshelves of anyone seriously interested in the Eastern Front.

The opening section spends about 12 pages outlining the chronology of the three wars that Finland fought in the period 1939-45; the 1939-40 Winter War and 1941-44 Continuation War against the Soviet Union and the 1944-45 Lapland War against the Germans. However the chronology section actually has a fair amount of detail and provides a good introduction to the subject. The heart of the volume lies in the 25-page section which discusses the organization of the Finnish army, covering all the major branches as well as paramilitary formations such as the Civil Guard and Foreign Volunteers. A brief section discusses tactics, including the use of "motti" encirclement attacks and snipers. A final section discusses weapons, including small arms, machineguns, anti-tank weapons and artillery (unfortunately, mortars were omitted). Overall, there is a wealth of information in this thin volume and it is one of the better of Osprey's Elite titles.

Eight pages of color plates by artist Raffaele Ruggeri depict the Finnish military and para-military forces from 1939-45. The photographs in the volume are also very good and most have not been printed in English-language books before. Perhaps the only area that gets a bit skimped on is in the areas of training and higher staff functions at corps-level, but this is understandable given the size restraints. Overall, a superb volume.

Great overview

This book is very well written and easy to read. It gives a very good overview of the Finnish military during WWII. If you don't know about heroic little Finland, and their fight for survival against Russia, then you are missing some great inspirational history. I consider this book a must-have for the Finnish military history buff.

Examining five major black Greek-letter fraternities, Jones maintains that hazing rituals within these fraternities are more deeply ingrained, physically violent, and imbued with meaning to their participants than the initiation rites of other ethnic groups. Because they do not see themselves as having the same political, social, and economic opportunities as other members of society, black fraternities and their members have come to see the ability to withstand physical abuse as the key ingredient in building and defining manhood. Excellent start but further work needed.

R.L. Jones has produced an exceptional book. His scholarship and presentation are pioneering and expert. Speaking as a reader who has "survived" the brutality of hazing while pledging a chapter of Omega Psi Phi, this book brought back many recollections about the 'process'. Prof. Jones has written about some of the very things that motivated my line brothers and I to endure such harsh treatment. To be "made right" and not be "cat" or an "Eternal Lamp". Making illogical and inhumane treatment seem totally acceptable and even caring or 'loving' on the part of our Big Brothers. The author talks of what contributes to the cycle of the abuse. For many folks 'on line' often dream about what hell they will be able to put others through when they in turn attempt to gain membership in the fraternity after them.
I found the book lacking (only somewhat) in several areas:

1. A more detailed analysis of intraracial ("light skin or dark skin") African American conflict and how it effects membership, economic class and even attraction of black individuals to certain Black Greek Fraternities and Sororities.
2. A discussion of Homosexuality and Black Greek Male Societies. The Homophobia that permeates the African American Community is often magnified in these groups which are founded on Christian heterosexual mores. Every group that I have come across on the Eastern seaboard at various campuses has always spoken negativly about gays while certain members have to remain 'closeted'. These men in turn may even be more brutal hazers as they attempt to prove to themselves that they are "real men" and quell any suspicions about their own sexuality. But as said, these groups mirror society.
3. More details in the Appendix of actual BGF hazing incidents were needed. Names and exact dates if possible so that those who want to research those incidents further (parents of students entering some of the institutions named for example).
But the book is very good and well worth the cost (softcover). I also recommend:

Master thesis, not a novel.

I bought this book under the assumption that it would delve into the hazing aspect of BGLO's at a...normal...view point. I bought this book for an extension of my studies of BGLOS's, hazing, and hazing's origins. I'd seen this book a few years ago, and researched it before I actually bought it, and before I bought it, I read a sample. Once I bought the book, I felt SO let down!

This book is a huge jumble of overly large words, assumptions, and guesses; I've found more profound knowledge on Youtube regarding BGLO's. This book reads like a master thesis with no entertainment value or real substance. This book does have it's plusses (though I can't think of any at the moment), but it does not live up to the hype. I would recommend reading Divine Nine, Captain of my Soul, and Rev. Hatchett's book "coming apart at the seams".

This is my 2nd review of the book. I wrote one back in July, and now I'm writing from the perspective of a person who has gone through a process and made it through to join a BGL fraternity. Dr. Jones needs to be commended for writing a book of this nature. One thing about some of the incidents in the book is there are some brothers and sisters who get carried away and do reckless hazing, but those are a few out of the majority. The ones who brought me through were more concerned about what I would bring to the fraternity and what I planned on doing with my life from here onward, and that is what it is about. It is unfortunate that there are some individuals, such as the ones described in the book, who go to unnecessary lengths and put their respective organizations at risk. I, like many other people who are in Black greek-letter frats and sororities, do not want to see our demise due to foolishness and other events which could easily be prevented. I don't know if there is a solution which could be applied across the board to make sure some of this can cease; it may take something being done chapter by chapter, because it is pretty much impossible to monitor what everyone is doing at the same time. For anyone who plans on going Greek, or who is already Greek, I strongly recommend this book.

This book describes both commonly used (e.g., randomized clinical trials) and advanced (e.g. preference trials, pragmatic trials) designs and methods for health intervention research. It outlines the theoretical reasoning underlying these different approaches, and synthesizes the evidence which supports or disputes different designs and methods.

To achieve its aims, the book is divided into three main sections. The first section points to the need to base methodological decisions on evidence and highlights the importance of carefully selecting research designs and methods to maintain validity. The second section focuses on designs to determine the effects of intervention on outcomes, outlining their features and discussing how these can be used to evaluate interventions. The last section covers methods used in conducting intervention evaluation research. For each design and method, the following is covered:  what it is, what the logic underlying it is, what the evidence supporting its effectiveness is, and also includes its advantages, its limitations, and how can it be implemented.

About the Author

Souraya Sidani is Professor and Canada Research Chair at the School of Nursing, Ryerson University. Her areas of expertise are in quantitative research methods, intervention design and evaluation, treatment preferences, and measurement. Her research areas of interest focus on evaluating interventions and advanced practice roles, on examining patient preferences for treatments, and on refining research methods and measures for determining the clinical effectiveness of interventions.
