Space, the final frontier

This is a huge collection of the work done by John Harris. Most of his art is obsessed with space and the machines that travel it. The work is amazing in that it captures the infinite quality of space: cold, bleak, lonely, and never ending. There are also paintings of the machines that must travel it in search of new resources or just exploration. The paintings are very unique and beautiful. But don't expect to see creatures or babes with very skimpy clothing, there aren't any in this book.
This book is worth owning for people who love sci-fi and also love ships like the Nostromo from "Alien". I personally hate clean, aerodynamic ships like in Star Trek. Deep space ships are supposed to be huge, klunky, and dirty. And that's what John Harris can paint.

This book is a must have for science fiction and concept artist. As well as avid art book collectors. The only way to describe this work is inspirational which is why you will see a lot of modern entertainment taking ques from John Harris, His paintings give way to scale and how massive these ships and structures are.

There is plenty of good text in here as well but lets face it this book is about the art and their is plenty of it.

Meaningful Biography Explains Stunning Images

Mass opens a door on the artistic process behind some of the best Sci-Fi artwork.

Unfortunately out of print, Mass furnishes not only quality color reproductions of John Harris' artwork, but also a meaningful biographical narrative. I had planned to ignore the narrative, but wound up reading every word. I'm glad I did, because the story behind the art is in this case as compelling as the art itself. Ron Tiner, himself an artist and illustrator, tells how Harris came into this line of work, where his images came from, and how he produced them. It is a tale embracing British public school culture, the Pop Art movement, transcendental meditation, and more.

And the images are themselves amazing. As illustrations for Sci-Fi stories by leading authors like Asimov, Harris' task is evocative, and he does not disappoint. If you've ever found yourself gazing minutes on end at the cover of a Sci-Fi book, I think you will appreciate Mass, both as a visual adventure and as an aid to understanding the process and origin of images that have helped millions visualize Sci-Fi.

The Only Book On Tequila & Other Agave Spirits Cocktails You'll Ever Need

This is the one-stop, all-you-can-eat, touchstone, benchmark, reference tome on all things agave in the spirits and cocktail world, with a decent bit of simple, tasty food recipes tossed in. Beautifully photographed, this book coaches the rookie and delights the seasoned pro. Know what an orange-mullet garnish is? Jamaica syrup? Raicilla? A palenquero? It's all in here. There are a million tequila-cocktails and Mexico-lifestyle books that seem similar to Tad & Paul's book, but frankly that's like comparing a skateboard to the International Space Station. This is the book to buy. Buy this book, use this book, and pass it on.

About the Author
Barry Brummett is the Charles Sapp Centennial Professor in Communication and chair of the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1978, and taught at Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin before coming to the University of Texas, Austin in 2001. Brummett has authored, coauthored, or edited numerous articles, scholarly essays, and books, including Contemporary Apocalyptic Rhetoric, Techniques of Close Reading, Rhetoric of Machine Aesthetics, and The Politics of Style and the Style of Politics. His research pursuits include the rhetoric of popular culture, epistemology, homologies relating the troubled physical structures represented in popular culture and troubled social structures, and the theories of Kenneth Burke.

Empowering students to use rhetoric to study popular culture

Barry Brummett's "Rhetoric in Popular Culture" seeks to bring the traditions of rhetorical criticism and critical studies together. Brummett applies the growing and cutting-edge methods of critical studies to the study of rhetoric, because he sees critical studies AS rhetorical criticism. This is a premise with which I whole-heartedly agree, which is not surprising given my interest in rhetoric and social theory. Part I consists of four chapters dealing with theoretical and methodological concerns. The extended case study is on the film version of "The Wizard of Oz," in which Brummett looks at how five critical methods (Marxist, feminist/psychoanalytic, dramatistic/narrative, media-centered, and culture-centered) would render different interpretations of Dorothy's trip over the rainbow. Part II provides three critical studies: "Paradoxes of Personalization: Race Relations in Milwaukee," "Twin Peeks: Using Theory in Two Analyses of Visual Pleasures" (by Brummett and Margaret Carlisle Duncan) and "Afrocentrism and 'DO THE RIGHT THING'" (by Detine L. Bowers).
Fortunately in this Postmodern world history is dead and most students are not aware of the rhetorical tradition that would disdain critical studies, not to mention popular culture. Consequently, Brummett does not have to convince students of the rightness of his cause, they are simply going to want to understand what he is talking about. Part I of this book is the stronger section, because Brummett's strength is in laying out his approach. Chapter 3, in which he looks at the key notion of "text," is the best one in the book. How you feel about Part II will come down to how relevant the specific case studies are to your students. Certainly "Do the Right Thing," despite its cultural importance once upon a time, would be considered "dated" by most students, although we might think it has again become relevant because of recent events. But Part I is basically two-thirds of the book, so I do not really think that this becomes a major consideration in deciding whether or not to use this book in class. Ultimately, the key consideration is going to be the sort of assignments you have the cherubs do off of the theories laid out in Part I. Brummet's point is that students should be empowered to "find the rhetoric in rap music, the motivations in heavy metal, and the arguments in argyle socks." That pretty much covers it all.

What this allows you to do is change the size of the text and it self-adjusts to always precisely fill the screen. This eliminates the need to scroll down and is actually a very nice feature.

Unfortunately, this flexibility means that there is no reference for the correlation between page numbers and "locations" and descriptions like "the middle of the page" are not constant (You can't even use the book's index because that still uses page numbers - thank goodness you can at least search the book!).

If this is a book for a class and the professor assigns the readings in chunks of pages vs. chapters then you will have no way of knowing what to read. Additionally, the Kindle format's DRM features lock you out from using text-to-speech (I'm on the mac kindle app) after a few pages because it interprets it as you copying the pages. So, if you suffer from eye strain like I do, you'll have do cringe your way through the reading. You also won't be able to cut and paste from the book then for use in your classwork.

In short, I should have just bought a paper edition. I recommend that's what you do too.

I ordered the third edition and was sent the second edition. Material is pretty much the same but the examples are different so i can't use my book for class.

Wrestling As Only Terry Funk Could Have Lived It

The problem with most wrestling autobiographies is that they're written by wrestlers who have little experience in the game. What does someone who has been in the business for 10 or less years really know, or is willing to reveal?

The WWE biographies read as if they've come out of the same template: I was born, I went into wrestling, Vince McMahon is the greatest thing since sliced bread. All this for $20 odd something dollars.

The best bios are written by people with real tenure in the business: Lou Thesz, Fred Blassie, Jim Wilson, and Ric Flair. In other words these are all people who have a real story to tell.

Add Terry Funk to this list of distinguished alumni. Terry's memoirs, written with Scott Williams (who earns a real tip of the hat for his contributions) seem as if we are sitting down in a comfortable room with Terry and listening to his life story. The book literally comes alive in the reader's hands and imagination, which cannot be said of many other books on the subject.

To say that Terry led an interesting life is an understatement. A member of what could rightfully be called, "the first family of wrestling," both Terry and brother Dory, Jr. have held the NWA World Title along with so many regional titles that it would take a couple of days to research. Father Dory, Sr. was a legend in the business himself, a man who, like Lou Thesz and Bruno Sammartino, replied on no other gimmick than his own ability, of which he had plenty.

Traveling with Terry, we discover how he got into wrestling, how it was decided to make his brother Dory, Jr., champion, and how it was decided to make Terry himself champion. He also discusses the effect wrestling had on his marriage and family, the lost art of selling (making one's opponent look like a world beater), the decline and fall of the NWA, WCW and ECW, and how the WWE almost became extinct at the hands of WCW (and how WCW blew that chance), and the state of the art today. Plus he paints hilarious portraits of quite a few of his co-workers over the years, including, Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, Jerry Lawler, Dick Slater and Mick Foley.

This is not just a book for put in your wrestling library - this is a book to READ and place in your wrestling library. But keep it in a handy place, because you'll want to refer to time and again.

An Almost Perfect Wrestling Bio

I'm a lifelong wrestling fan and Terry Funk has always been a huge favorite of mine, so, when I heard he wrote a book, I just had to order it. I wasn't disappointed once I read it. However, this is not a "perfect" wrestling bio. So far, there's only been two of those -- Mick Foley's "Have A Nice Day" and Ric Flair's "To Be The Man."

The stories in this book, which there are plenty, are told in a blunt, often comical fashion... and the language used made me feel like Terry himself was regaling the tales to me. There's no denying this book was written by the Amarillo, Texas native.

Funk really makes you feel like you were there with him through the trials and tribulations of his lengthy career. He also shares insight to his family life, which humanizes the larger-than-life superstar, alwaysa good thing.

My only beef with this book is how the stories go all over the place. There doesn't seem to be any chronological order to Terry's story. It often jumps from one time period to the next and then back again. While it didn't ruin the book for me, it did make it a pretty jarring read at times.

No doubt about it, I recommend this book to wrestling fans, young and old. However, it could've been better. Don't get me wrong. The content is outstanding. It's just the way that it's presented that I have a problem with.

3 CHEERS FOR THE FUNKER

As a longtime wrestling fan, I was pleased to see that a true hardcore legend has finally gotten a chance to tell his story, and MORE THAN JUST HARDCORE was a very fun read.

The Funker gives you insights of both sides of the wrestling business, as both a promoter in the Amarillo territory in the 60's and 70's, as well as being an active in-ring performer. It was quite interesting to read how Funk would have to separate himself between the two sides of the business whenever he had to make a difficult decision. He also goes into detail about his many retirement matches, and how his love for the business makes it hard for him to stay away from it for very long.

The road stories of travelling with Dick Murdoch, Dusty Rhodes and Mick Foley are fantastic, and well worth the price of admission. Best of all, the co-writer really captures Funk's unique diction, so it feels as if he's telling these tall tales over a beer rather than in a 200-something page book.

One particularly nice thing about this book is that Funk doesn't spend whole chapters knocking other talents, as has been the vogue lately. Generally, he focuses on the positive side of his peers, and stays away from overly criticizing other wrestlers. It's a nice change of pace after the controversy surrounding the Mick Foley, Bret Hart and Ric Flair squabbles from 2004 surrounding Flair's WWE book.

Ultimately, I've yet to read a wrestling book that tops Mick Foley's HAVE A NICE DAY, but I'd put MORE THAN JUST HARDCORE very near the top of my "Best" list.

Compression of audio and video has enabled the digital revolution in media that we are all immersed in today, and has been used for many years. Just about all of the audio or video you are exposed to now has been digitized and compressed. Not just what you see or hear on a computer or a mobile phone, but also DVD, cable TV, often even radio. So compression of audio and video is an important and powerful topic, in a way that few people seem to really understand. So a book like Ben Waggoner's Compression for Great Video and Audio has a lot of potential for usefullness and impact.

There are a bewildering array of methods that can be used to compress audio or video, and a range of ways to deliver that content. The wealth of information this book offers on a wide range of topics is its strength, and is enough to make this book attractive to many who are interested in this topic.

And it's organized in a way that will be useful to those both new to the field and those who have some knowledge. Trying to hunt up this information on the internet won't give you what you need, in a reliable way. It's presented here in a more complete and clear way than you'll find by searching.

But as someone once ironically commented, the great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from. That's where this book has gaps. The big questions in compression often involve difficult choices and tradeoffs. In fact, fundamentally compression is all about difficult choices and tradeoffs - how much bandwidth or storage are you using, how do you allocate it to video or audio, and so on. While there's some good and very general advice, this Second Edition doesn't go far enough in helping users make decisions to complete their projects, such as: What codecs should I use? What bitrate should I use? How should I trade off between bitrate used for video and for audio? While in many cases these decisions may be made by the organization you are part of, or the hardware or software platforms you are using - that will not always be the case.

Further, the treatment of audio is cursory and needs to be significantly enhanced. Again, there is some good information and advice, just not nearly enough of it for a book promises to cover that topic well.

So Compression for Great Video and Audio has lots of good information, and some wise advice. I didn't find much that was wrong (and that's a risk in this field - there is an incredible amount of information that's just wrong in many discussions of compression). That's enough to recommend the book. But there are a lot of gaps, and the title seems to promise much more than the book delivers. This book is worth the price, but it isn't a complete guide to Compression for Great Video and Audio.

Covers the Basics to the Sophisticated

The author knows the realities -- in a digital world loaded with audio applications, many users futz around, get a result that sounds and looks ok, and tend to move on. This book is dedicated to teaching people how truly manipulate compressed media data to get the best results possible. The author starts with some of the basic physics of audio and visual, and them moves into more sophisticated territory such as quantization.

Throughout, this book presents both the nitty-gritty details and a large overview. For this reason, it functions as a quick how-to that can solve a problem and also as an all-purpose reference text.

The meat of the meal is chapter 3 which is about the basics of compression. The clarity and sophistication brought to the part of the book is admirable.

Throughout, the book presents matters in a clear writing style and the layout is decent.

I got this book as I just wanted to know more about the multitude of video and audio formats available and what were the quality trade-offs between these formats. Why is one format better than the other etc.? This book covers each format in great details and provides comprehensive information on this subject.

The book begins by diving into Fundamentals of Compression, then gets into Digital Workflow, Production and Preprocessing. Along the way it discusses types of compressions, picking a production format, aspect ratios, noise reduction, scaling, decoding etc. The next part is Using Video Codecs which talks about Bitstream, Data Rates, Frame Size, Frame Rate. Next comes Audio Codecs followed by all video/audio formats - each one is a separate chapter going into details of each format.

However, for the hardcore enthusiasts and converters, it may not give all the information they are looking for to convert one format to another, especially for video with audio.

Overall, a comprehensive book which can be used as a reference for media formats.

**Here's why this book is Worth Buying!!! **

I've purchased a LOT of guitar instruction books over the last 3 years of guitar playing. My focus is Blues, hence me picking this book up. What I like MOST about this book is, it is SIMPLE in it's instruction and approach, yet the ideas are really rooted in musical theory. It does NOT clog up pages with music theory. I have a TON of books that do, and end up putting those down because I'm just not there most of the time on concepts, and I JUST LIKE PLAYING GUITAR. I don't always want to THINK ABOUT STUFF when I'm playing. I have used this book consistently for over a year now, and I LOVE it!!! Some of the reasons I like it are: there are a LOT of examples in each chapter, and they progress at a manageable pace. The examples are MUSICAL. Big bonus. The examples are not too difficult causing frustration, and not too hard causing boredom. I've learned a LOT of really great chords using this book.!:-)
The way I practice is, I'll go thru a chapter, all the examples, and then spend about a week each chapter, then go to the next chapter, then repeat the previous chapter. I just keep repeating the older ideas along with the stuff I just learned. This is not a super in depth "music theory" guide, but rather a really logical guide with just enough info so you grasp the concept. You're not bogged down in theory. I use this book and maybe only one or two others more than ANY other guide books I've bought. This is PERFECT. If you're into the blues, the ONLY other one I use as much as this one is "Blues you can use," which is awesome as well, and worth purchasing.
I feel like I know what I'm talking about as I've purchased about 30 instruction books trying to find something that works for ME. We all learn differently, but this one is really worth looking into if my story sounds similar to the way you like to practice/study. And maybe I'll see ya out on the road eventually! :-)

This is where to start

I bought the first three volumes of this series, and figured I'd review this one since it's the most likely one someone would purchase first. I've been playing just about anything with strings for more decades than I'd like to think about, and I own hundreds of technical music books. I'm always looking for interesting approaches, different ways of looking at theory and application, and, especially pertinent regarding Mr. Alexander's works, the most efficient ways to teach. So here it is: if you're a relative novice looking to play blues or rock, you'll be wasting a lot of time if you buy any other book.

'Complete Guide' bypasses everything you don't need to know (you can waste years on that stuff), and provides a comprehensive, standard, easily applied method of learning rhythm and lead for blues, which is the basis of rock and much of jazz. With a bit of effort, you'll get to the point that you can play with others faster using Mr. Alexander's method much more quickly than if you'd gone to music school or tried another approach. The sound files are very helpful, later books in this series seamlessly build on the material presented here, and if you want to later try any of the Jazz or 'modern guitar' material, you'll be treading comfortably familiar ground.

I'd thought it had all been written, and than nobody could add much to the genre. I was wrong. Buy this one, you'll be glad you did.

Exactly what I was looking for.

I'm a beginning / Intermediate player and actually not a huge blues fan, but I know it can be confusing where to start and where to go with learning guitar. Learn basic math before you get to algebra. This book really breaks down rock / blues in it's basic form and you will start to understand and expand on whatever music genre you're into. You don't have to be an Albert Collins fan but you'll appreciate where it all came from. Blues will give you a place to go to expand your guitar playing experience. I was all over the place until I decided I just needed to ground myself in a course. Great book.
