About the Author

Robin Sowerby was Senior Lecturer in English Studies at the University of Stirling, Scotland. Trained as a classicist, his research interests centre upon the Classical tradition. I had to read this book for my HRS class which is an introductory class on Ancient Greeks. When I first started reading the book I was just reading it to prepare for my exam but right off I started to like reading it. It's so easy to understand and very well written. I would recomend this book for just reading it because it's so good. It really tells everything important about the culture, and etc. of the Greeks.

While the book content is fine, the Kindle edition was hastily/cheaply prepared. In particular, the OCR software had trouble distinguishing the 'ri' combination from the letter 'n' so the text is filled with errors like 'vanous' (for 'various') and 'offenngs' (for 'offerings'). It is most disturbing when this occurs within a name ('Pans' for 'Paris') or uncommon words that a student may wish to look up. While it is possible to overlook such poor quality in a common romance novel or the like, it is quite unacceptable in a college textbook.

Mark Kleanthous finished last in his first competitive experience at a school cross-country race. Over the past 30 years Mark has crossed the finish line in over 1,000 endurance races worldwide. His strength has always been in multi-sport events, where his wins have been numerous. He has completed a massive total of 400 triathlons, including 32 Ironman® distance events. He once won one triathlon in the morning and then came second in another in the afternoon. He started coaching in 1998 and has helped triathletes at every level from first-timers to age-group competitors to elite athletes.

About the Author
Harinder S. Kohli is President and CEO of the Centennial Group. He is also the Chief Executive of the Emerging Markets Forum and is on the Advisory Board of the Asian Institute of Technology. Prior to starting the Centennial Group, Kohli spent 26 years with the World Bank in a series of senior positions. He has led World Bank teams that participated in the Multilateral Working Groups of the Middle East Peace Process and developed a conceptual programme for Economic Development in the Middle East. This work became the foundation for the international development assistance to West Bank and Gaza after the peace accord.
He is the principal author of the report of an Eminent Persons Group entitled Towards a New Asian Development Bank in a New Asia and of World Bank’s report Infrastructure Development in East Asia and Pacific: Towards a New Public Private Partnership. In addition he has written articles and delivered speeches on Asian Economics, Private Capital Flows, Regional Economic Cooperation, Industrial Development, Enterprise Development and Privatization, Energy, Information Technology and the Middle East Economic Development issues.
Prior to joining the World Bank, Kohli worked with the Union Carbide in India and the Pechiney Group in France. He has a Masters in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School (elected Backer Scholar with High Distinction) and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab University, India (First Class Honors). He is married to Paulina Ledergerber Crespo, an anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of Natural History.

Anil Sood, in his 30-year career at the World Bank, occupied many senior positions including Vice President, Strategy and Resource Management, and Special Advisor to the Managing Directors. He has since advised chief executives and senior management of a number of development organizations including the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Economic Commission of Africa, on matters of strategy and development effectiveness.

A heavily researched and developed book written and edited by contributors from the World Bank and other government ministries. The strengths are its excellent data and reporting out on key sectors in India under the premise that India can leap to affluent society status in a single generation with improvemts in multiple sectors, particulalry infrastructure and the education at all levels. The ambition for affluent society status is rather gung ho, a salutation of India's aggressive economic growth that has indeed lifted the boats of 200 million of its 1.2 billion inhabitants.

Not much has been said about the effect of growth on the environment and now is the time to think about designing an industry and economic system that complements the environment and quality of life. The term Environment Refugee refers to people who move to beautiful, pristine places where the air and water are clean, the grass is green and the sky is blue. While such places undoubtedly exist in India, the major cities and towns are smog ridden, polluted, traffic clogged and a health hazard. Is this the affluent, brave new India the Indians want?

Good despite totally misleading title

This book is about the history on the making of James Bond movies, up until Casino Royale. That's all 21 films if you're counting.

Included are lots of on-set photographs, some concept artwork consisting mainly of storyboards. There are also interviews with key talents like Michael G.Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, Ken Adam, John Barry and Martin Campbell.

In essence, this book is about the history of James Bond and how it made it to the big screen. Many production stories are included in the interviews, like how they fix up the set, cast characters and choose music. These stories come in the form of interviewees' quotes. There is no narration in the book.

The book could be thicker given James Bond's long and illustrious history. I just can't help thinking about how much stuff they left out. I guess they may be covered in other James Bond books.

It's a good read overall, but mainly for James Bond fans.

The best Bond book on the market by a master writer!!!

This book is amazing! It has SO much 007 info, never before seen photos, illuminating text, zillions of interviews with some of the most influential directors of our time, including Spielberg. Bouzereau offers an A-Z listing of everything you always wanted to know about the art of James Bond films. Beyond merely stating the facts, he also punctuates the listings with his own elucidating commentary on characters, actors, set designers, costume designers, with bits of trivia, etc. The text is further buttressed with hundreds of rare, never before seen color and black-and-white stills. In sum, this is a rich resource for all Bond fans who will be both shaken and stirred by the multitude of factoids and photos. HIGHLY Recommended!!! Buy this book, you'll love it!!!!

A great historical novel

Because he was famous as a participant in the Irish Civil War (in 1922, he raised a red flag over the Dublin Rotunda) and because his best-known book is "The Informer," Liam O'Flaherty is regarded primarily as a novelist of the Irish rebellion. In a letter to the Irish Statesman, he celebrated "the wild tumult of the untamed storm, the tumuilt of the army on the march, clashing its cymbals, rioting with excess of energy." Like our own Theodore Dreiser, he was capable of being crude, grandiose and melodramatic, and he was often swamped by his own rhetoric. But he was also capable, far more than Dreiser, alas, of reaching and expressing astonishingly delicate perceptions of the human soul.

At his best, O'Flaherty was one of the great natural forces of 20th Century literature. Like Jean Giono or Knut Hamsun, when writing about the land, the sea and the simpler creatures, including here peasants and seamen, his writing takes on the elemental forcefulness of classic folk tales. "Famine," his greatest work in this mode, is matched only in his best short stories. It reads as freshly today as it did when it was first published 45 years ago.

In 1845, the population of Ireland was estimated at 8.5 million. By 1851, it had been reduced by two million, half of whom had died and half of whom had fled, mostly to the U.S. and other former British colonies. The raw numbers do not do justice to the magnitude of the catastrophe that had befallen Ireland. In large parts of the south and west, traditional culture had been uprooted and destroyed.

Focusing on a family of County Galway tenant farmers, the Kilmartins, "Famine" inserts us into the horror of the "great hunger." A study of the uses of power -- by the old English ascendancy, by the rising middle class of usurious merchants, by the embattled (and mostly defeated peasants), it records the final days of an ancient, ritualistic society, unhinged by the destruction of the customs and traditions that had given shape and meaning to life. It is also about survival, especially that of Mary Gleeson Kilmartin, who fights for her family with fierce determination.

["Famine" was first published in 1937 but was never available in soft cover until a handsome edition was offered by David R. Godine's line of quality paperbacks, Nopareil, which also published works by Benedetto Croce, Edmund Wilson, Paula Fox, William Gass and Stanley Elkin. It was thought at the time that the publisher might be moved to reprint O'Flaherty's excellent short story collections, "Spring Sowing" and "The Tent." Liam O'Flaherty is the guardian of a lifestyle and a traditional way of thinking which died with the Great Famine. Read "Famine" and you'll know why the Irish are the way they are. It's recommended reading for anyone trying to get a peek at the Irish psyche.

epic novel

I loved this book and read it twice. It is at once sweeping and intimate. Without sounding trite it reminded me of Gone With the Wind, and one day I'm sure someone will make a movie of it, especially since Ireland has become popular in the media again. Based on the truth, a classic.
