A Great Way to Learn About Egypt!

My seven-year-old daughter loved this book! In her words, "It was really interesting and I like how you couldn't really guess what was going to happen." She told me all about the Egyptians' beliefs as she was reading, especially the part about weighing the heart.

All in all, a really fun way for kids to learn about Egyptian history!

God of the underworld-what could be better!

Anubis clearly loves his job; being worshiped and getting to toss still beating hearts to the crocodile-headed Amut the Destroyer, what could be better? In this chatty, behind-the-scenes tour, the jackal-headed god of the underworld guides readers through an epic nightly battle, as Egyptian Gods fight against the forces of darkness and evil to ensure the sun god Ra is reborn: rising anew with the dawn. Schecter does a remarkable job of making the complicated iconography of Egyptian mythology both clear and memorable, without dumbing-it-down. Convivial, yet menacing, Anubis orients readers with the Egyptian creation myth and then gets down to the really gross stuff. In between the blood, guts and snakes he manages to convey lots of accurate, precise, nuanced and compelling information about Egyptian practices and beliefs, making Anubis Speaks both an excellent curricular resource and a fun recreational read. Cleverly, a caution at the beginning warns of alarming content while simultaneously functioning as a source-note. An index, glossary, guide to Gods and Demons encountered, and an extensive list of sources, establish nonfiction bona fides - making this an auspicious beginning to the new Secrets of the Ancient Gods series.

It describes a routine night journey of Ra, the great sun god, through the lands of the dead, to be reborn the following morning, all from the perspective of Anubis, the jackal-headed god of mummification. During the journey, Anubis narrates stories of other Egyptian mythology, including the creation of the world, the story of Osiris, etc. He also speaks of the factual process of how the dead were mummified and prepared for the afterlife, among other historical events and personages. A comedic approach to learning about Egyptian myths, along with some history. Entertaining for young readers, age 12+

As tired and hackneyed as the title

I'd like to claim I was pleasantly surprised by Hardy's latest effort: a predictable, limp, cut'n'paste of his "greatest hits" (a laughable concept - every one of his books feeds off his first effort, B-Boy Blues. James Earl Hardy is the epitome of the author who has one good book in them - the trouble is, no one's had the nerve to break the news to him) but I wasn't.

Hardy must be thrilled with the tragic demise of E. Lynn Harris, since it leaves clear the field for sub-soap blaxploitation. And despite his pretensions of civil rights activism, that's all Hardy ever manages to churn out: bad soap with some added heat. His crude stereotypes are offensive, and his style cringe-worthy. Reading a James Earl Hardy novel is like reading a story on a social networking site like BGCLive.

And that's really the best description for drivel like this: fan fiction on a forum. The author is so in love with his own work that he's almost spoofing himself. Still, for Hardy this Kindle-only short story must be a big comedown from those heady hardback days back in the '90s, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.

This third look focuses on "the drama within Michael Jordan's Third Coming," when the superstar came out of his second not-so-happy retirement in 2000 to become president of operations for the Washington Wizards, and his subsequent return in 2001 to the court as a player. For fans of Jordan as well as anyone who loved basketball during the 1990s, when Jordan's Chicago Bulls won six championships, this is an insightful depiction of Jordan's attempt "to recapture that endorphin of being the ultimate winner" in a new era. But Krugel's access and insight also unintentionally produce some of the book's problems: while Krugel deftly analyzes Jordan's desire to be the sole arbiter of what will be his "last shot"-not the sports media world-his attempts to present the inner world of Jordan's comeback year are too often uncritical and awkward ("Something about pain attracted Michael, even tempted him"). Overall, this is an excellent look at an aging superstar's struggle "to find other places besides the basketball court to define his worth."

In his third book on Michael Jordan, New Jersey sportswriter Krugel concentrates on the athlete's most recent comeback. Perhaps owing to this narrow focus, the book does not lack for detail-Krugel chronicles nearly every game of Jordan's return season with the Washington Wizards-but as a result the text feels overcrowded and becomes heavy and unclear. Good sportswriters know how to vary the tempo of their writing-offering detail or "the big picture" as required. Krugel gives so much space to the minutiae that we never understand why we should know how many points Jordan scored in a mid-season game against a bad team. Furthermore, in his efforts to deify Jordan (he refers to his "First Coming," his "Second Coming," etc.), Krugel makes sweeping generalizations about basketball's high-profile players not being worth much because they aren't Michael Jordan, which is unfair and inaccurate. Among the crowded field of Jordan studies, readers would be better served by David Halberstam's Playing for Keeps. Recommended for diehard Jordan fans only.

Krugel has made a second career writing about Jordan from a distance (Jordan: The Man, His Words, His Life, 1994, and Michael Jordan, 1988). Once more he cobbles together a portrait from secondary sources. Is it good reading? Yes. Krugel is a fan and is as fascinated as the rest of us by Jordan's indefatigable competitiveness and compulsion to create obstacles to overcome. He includes quotes from teammates, rivals, coaches, and family about the athlete who has zeroed in on Father Time as his most significant opponent. Last season's comeback after a three-year "retirement" crystallized all Michael's strengths--mental toughness, work ethic, intelligence--as well as his major weakness: stubbornness bordering on obsession. Krugel chronicles the comeback from beginning to end, so there is a lot of "he shot poorly from the field until the fourth quarter" as well as a summary of Jordan's early years. In depth look of the greatest basketball player

Author chronicles Jordan's first season on a playoff mission with the Washington Wizards, something which happened when this franchise was still known as the Bullets.
The book opens with Jordan sinking that picture perfect shot against Utah then to his foray as a Wizard executive, practicing with the Wizards players then to his experiences in the court with teammates not named Scottie or Dennis but Kwame, Brendon. Krugel paints a Jordan looking for that one last shot, that one last roll of the dice no matter how many times over he has beaten the house.
I really loved this book for it gave us an in depth look of Jordan at his lowest point - from there you could begin to grasp how he won all those championships. The book also explains why there was a comeback attempt and why it ultimately failed. As proof, the author compares Jordan's best performance as a Bull compared to Jordan's best performance as a Wizard.
In the end, it was Jordan's body that let him down but not his indomitable will. Though there were times when he could hold his own against a new generation led by Kobe, Pierce and Iverson, he failed miserably when measured against the standard to which all other future basketball players will be measured - his former incarnation.

ONE LAST CHANCE IS ABOUT THE 3RD COMEBACK BY FORMER NBA GREAT MICHAEL JORDAN. AFTER BEING AWAY FROM THE GAME FOR 3 YEARS, JORDAN RETURNS AT AGE 38 TO TRY AND TAKE THE WIZARDS TO THE PLAYOFFS. MJ HAD ALOT OF RUST AND MILEAGE ON HIM AS HE TRYS TO BE THE MAN ON THE WIZARDS. SOME NIGHTS HE WAS, BUT MOST HE WAS MEDICORE OR LOUSY. MJ LET HIS SUPERSIZE EGO TELL HIM THAT HE WAS STILL GOOD ENOUGHT TO COMPETE AND PLAY MOST OF THE GAME NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. BUT AGE AND A BAD KNEE DID HIM IN. THERE IS SOME INTERESTING STORIES IN THIS BOOK AND I DID LIKE IT. I KNOW JORDAN IS THE BEST GUARD I HAVE SEEN. THIS BOOK MAKES HIM HUMAN, BUT WE DON'T REALLY KNOW MUCH ABOUT JORDAN THE PERSON IN THIS BOOK EXCEPT FOR HIS PASSION FOR BASKETBALL. IF YOU ALREADY KNOW ALOT ABOUT JORDAN'S PERSONAL LIFE THEN THIS IS A BOOK FOR YOU. THIS IS WHAT IT IS COVERING THE 2 YEARS HE TRIED A COMBACK.

Bam jordan hits the game winning shot from the top of the key.If you haved watched jordan before this is regular event.This new book shows jordans new will to win and his fire inside that brought him back to the game he loved at 40.
All though this book was a bit repeating i thought it should what jordan thought.He was such an allstar and will always be.In this book you will see the personal battles (his wife wanting a divorce) to his physical battles(his knee injury).The book doesnt only explain his physical battles.It also shows his struggle switching from owner to player and playing with a team that had his posters on his wall.
I thought the author did a good job through out the book keeping the readers attetion and keeping him wanting more.This book shows a side of jordan you have never seen.Overall this was a very good book.I would recomend this to everyone.

This is an awesome text book that brings together recent work over the last 15 years with preexisting learning and memory concepts. Short of reading 30 review papers, Hasselmo discusses key concepts that will ultimately shape the field of spatial memory, particularly the role of theta rhythm in the EEG. For any entry-level neuroscientist studying learning and memory, this is required reading to become up-to-date on the field.

Difficult but worth struggling through

This author is one of the foremost experts in memory and he really takes a lot of time to explain his theories and experimnts. I learned so much from my multiple reading of his book, it was well worth it. This is not easy reading for the lay person interested in the neurological underpinnings of memory but there is a lot to learn from this. If you have the drive to read the book a couple of times you will glean much.

Addictive Desires- feel the burn ....

A revamped rewritten Vampire story scored with moments of bold drama and untamed sensuality .

Plot
The key character Tess has a tender innocence to begin with , reluctant to get involved with the heavyweights of the paranormal scene she is eventually forced to seek the protection of Vampire nobility and beat the braying wolves close on her heels .

Themes -multi layered but I will focus on the central aspect of the novel

The symbiosis between Tess and "Symon" the lead male in the novel is electric . He is a Vampire with a strapping appetite for carnal pursuits and pushes Tess all the way . This relationship dynamic leads to some risqué scenes framed with a crushing sexual intensity that leads to more temptation .

Style

The narrative follows convention , the characters are extremely well formed and it is a neat- well finished work that will be well received by fans of this genre .

Great book!

I had the pleasure of reading Wide Awake, written by Jade Cooper. This book was phenomenal and had me hooked from the first page. I have really grown fond of vampire and werewolf romance novels and this is one of the best I have read. This book has a great paranormal background and has strong characters that are well written. There is a bit of erotica included in this book but its not overly distracting. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good romance.

REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK BUT

...I'M not sure whether the author plans to continue the series. I am rather upset at this point to realize that I have been drawn into and fallen under the spell of a series that may not even continue. This book was released in Oct 2012 and I have no leads regarding whether there will be a sequel or whether the series will be continued. The author makes no mention of the latter @ the end of the book.

The story has all the elements necessary for a thrilling and erotic vampire romance series. Symon is an orgasmaicly salacious Lord/King of the vampire who's discovery of his mate is accompanied by a whole lot of drama and possible cataclysmic repercussions. I like Tess so far. The author manages to get a whole lot of story into these 76 pages. The sex scenes are hot but could be a tad bit more explicit. It ends in a cliff hanger so it up to you whether you want to read this book and get hooked on a series that may or may not be continued. I sure hope the author continues this series. HOPE UR READING THIS JADE!!!

Steve Krug (pronounced "kroog") is best known as the author of Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, now in its second edition with over 350,000 copies in print. Ten years later, he finally gathered enough energy to write another one: the usability testing handbook Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems. The books were based on the 20+ years he's spent as a usability consultant for a wide variety of clients like Apple, Bloomberg.com, Lexus.com, NPR, the International Monetary Fund, and many others.

His consulting firm, Advanced Common Sense ("just me and a few well-placed mirrors") is based in Chestnut Hill, MA. Steve currently spends most of his time teaching usability workshops, consulting, and watching old episodes of Law and Order.

New & Improved!

There has been a noticeable shift in technology design - it's all about us - the users! In light of this change, Steve Krug has updated his bestselling guide to web usability. As he says himself, "The basic principles are the same even if the landscape has changed, because usability is about people and how they understand and use things, not about technology. And while technology often changes quickly, people change very slowly."

His core common sense approach remains the same, but with all the new devices that people are interacting with these days, the competitiveness of a product relies on how easy it is to use. You could pay for a professional like Krug to determine how usable your product is, if you can afford it. But even then, it's important to learn the principles yourself so you know whether the person you hire is considering and addressing the right issues. Happily, this book practices what it preaches, it's written in a friendly chatty way and well designed. In short, this great book goes down easy.

I've come across a lot of design books in my time and several in my last year while pursuing a higher education in graphic design - including a personal favorite The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving, which Krug strongly endorses in a previous edition's "Recommended Reading". It would have been so great to have this book at my disposal while I was studying website design because the information is so well organized. For my classes I was provided Peachpit software books, which I found a little hard to follow for being too text heavy. If you are going to educate on design principles, you should follow similar rhetoric. Krug's book organizes information in color, in tables, and often have entertaining illustrations.

3 Hour Read Full of Useful Information and Practical Tips

I read the book pretty fast, as I knew I would since the first one was a quick read as well. I've been waiting for it to come, especially since I had to speak at a tech conference a few weeks ago on "What We Know About Your Website Users."

I read it in three chunks, 30 minutes, then 1 hour on the treadmill walking and another hour on the treadmill today. I nearly injured myself only once when I dropped the book. So, in 3 hours or less, someone can learn a lot of important issues to consider about the making or redesign of a website!

I'm familiar with the older edition as it was required reading in grad school. Friends regularly ask me to look at their sites and usually the suggestions I make for improvement originate from usability guidelines in this book. Sometimes I get them to go buy it, and they come back to me with gratitude.

It's especially a great book for small business owners and soloprenuers who can't spend much money for web help. It would also be very helpful for anyone thinking about doing mobile usability testing - he covers the issues and challenges with that.

I really like the updated examples in this edition - they are great. Generally I felt like I had learned most, not all, of the information from the first book and that class in grad school. However, I by no means remember to use all the principles so it was great to review and think about things I need to change on my own website and for the sites I'm in the process of making now for others.

The mobile chapter was really what I was eager to see to learn some new things. I wanted an easy answer like "responsive is the way to go!" - and, understandably, that's not what's there since its about tradeoffs and not black and white (darn it!). But Krug did really raise my awareness of mobile design choices. For example, being conscious about the use of flat design and not just doing it because it is trendy, making sure buttons are still clear, etc. He hits on affordances/visual signals. Terrific mobile examples as well.

I wanted more on mobile, but I understand technology is in flux right now so we'll have to see how it all plays out. Krug does make some comments about the mobile first movement and responsive design.

(Hey Steve Krug, maybe you could write an entire book just about mobile usability? I'd buy it!)

The footnotes made me laugh or smile. I like the personal nature they give the book. Also the photos, tables, cartoons, and illustrations break up the text and make it more manageable. I like that I can pick up the book, flip to a page and read a chunk of info that I may be able to use immediately - like the advice around breadcrumbs.

I particularly liked Chapter 11 "Usability as Common Courtesy."

All in all, I find Krug to be very giving with information and resources. The jimmy rigging of a camera setup for $30 for mobile usability testing is an example.

Krug makes usability accessible for regular folks. This also should make us more responsible for considering users when making websites.

I know the websites I make will be better because I read this book.

Common sense, but the book organizes it

Yes, all of his interface design comments are fairly well known and understood. You could probably come up with them if you had a lot of time and reviewed many good (and bad) websites for examples. But why go through that effort? King organizes all of the important elements of web design and clearly discusses them. The examples are excellent and his writing style is straightforward and easy to read. The book is great as a refresher for experienced designers as well as novices. Highly recommended!
