Grabbed this from the unlimited selection. I only had a vague knowledge of compass function and map reading. This was short and to the point, gives you a good understanding of how to navigate with a compass!

Save your money! As someone who learned land nav in the Marine Corps and taught it to our SWAT team I buy most books on subjects that I teach to add tools to my toolbox. This book is way over priced. The information in here is not that well written! Basic Essentials by Cliff Jacobson is a way better book! Wilderness Navigation with map and compass by Bob and Mike Burns is probably one of the best books on the subject that I recommend to all of my officers looking to learn more! After learning the basics do your self a favor and get some dirt time. It will greatly inhance your confidence!

An Excellent Guide for Beginner and Intermediate Surface 2 Users

One thing to note about this book before you even begin to consider your purchase is that it covers the Surface 2 and Windows RT 8.1 only. It does NOT cover the Surface Pro. If you have the Surface Pro, look elsewhere. With that said, My Surface 2 is an excellent guide to the Surface 2 and has been fully updated to cover Windows RT 8.1. The book starts at the very beginning with a 23-page introduction to the device itself as well as the basics of getting started with RT 8.1.

The book then naturally progresses to information about setting up network connections so that you can get your Surface 2 updated and start using it to its full potential... many of the features rely on having an Internet connection. You'll learn how to back up your data, access the Internet, use mail, how to setup your calendar, as well as play music, watch video, take and view pictures, and more. The later chapters in the book explain how to use the various Office apps with separate chapters dedicated to each 2013 app: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook.

The book is beautifully designed with clear, numbered instructions for each tasks as well as full-color pictures that are labeled with the various step numbers so that you know exactly what to do. What you won't find here is extra tips and tricks or information about how the author actually uses his device. The main purpose of the book, however, is to provide an organized, detailed, list of tasks broken down into easy-to-follow steps, and it achieves that goal perfectly.

Great book

Very good book that is well laid out with concise directions and good clear pictures. I've had my Surface 2 for about three months now so I'm not a complete novice, but I've still learned a lot from this book. As a previous poster said, it's for the Surface 2 and not the Surface Pro 2, although I don't know why anyone would expect it to, given its title.

Beware! Covers Win RT8.1 Surface Computers, NOT Surface Pro 2

This may be an excellent book for those with a Surface 2 with the ARM microprocessor. I was surprised to find that it does not cover the Surface 2 Pro Computer like the one I own. The cover of the book does show in small print "Updated for Windows RT 8.1", but I assumed that both the Surface 2 and the Surface 2 Pro would be included. Windows RT is much more restrictive than the Windows most people are accustomed to and that's why I opted to buy the more expensive Surface 2 Pro. Standard Windows software that runs on Windows desktops and laptops cannot be run on a Windows RT computer. Microsoft does supply a special RT version of Office, but it only runs on ARM-based computers. Unfortunately, it seems no book has been published yet that covers the Surface 2 Pro.

Hope shares his memories of Golf with great humor, as always

In this book, Bob Hope chronicles many of his experiences on the Golf Course, with such people as Gerald Ford, Bing Crosby, etc. Although Hope's marvelous sense of humor comes through in the book, there are many other works by Hope that are far more personal and fascinating pertaining to Bob Hope himself. I would recommend that you purchase this book only if you love Golf as well as Bob Hope.

Great, Great Memories

I definitely agree that if you love Bob Hope and golf as I do then this book is for you. There are many, many wonderful black and white pictures too numerous for me to name. A few that comes to mind is Sam Snead, Joe Louis on the golf course, Jackie Gleason, Gerald Ford, Jack Nicklaus, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope at different ages, Bing Crosby, Dwight Eisenhower, Forrest Tucker, Dorthy Lamour and many, many others. Just the pictures of these famous people is a treasure.

Now the bonus is that there is an index of ALL of the people whose picture is in the book at some point. So I guess the real value of this book would be to someone about 40 years or older who know of the celebrities that are in the book and can appreciate history and nostalgia.

However, I am referring to the hardcopy and not the paperback. I haven't seen a copy of the paper back and the paper may not be as crisp as the ones in the hardcopy which may affect how the photos appear.

Review of Ellen Mickiewicz's, No Illusions:The Voices of Russia's Future Leaders

This book is that rare "good read" and an important key to the future of Russia. It makes one think about how U.S. foreign policy should be shaped, in view of Russia's actions in the world. It's a solid work on Russia's future leaders based on access to the current elites now finishing the universities, from which the leadership comes.

I was surprised by the huge gap between the future leaders "living" online and the current ones in power, who seem unable to connect with this upcoming group. Online there are all the foreign news sources they want. That access is essential to the constant comparisons they make to domestic news reports. Those comparisons, using the languages they're required to learn, is necessary to get a fix on what's true and what isn't, but it is a great deal of extra work every single day. Future leaders admire the Scandinavian forms of government -- the attempt to ensure people's ability to live well and be cared for, and enjoy free speech and a free press.

Alexei Navalny proves to be an important character in the book, but Mickiewicz shows how contradictory his different sides are: hero, protester, face of the opposition, provider of legal help to the needy, while tenaciously uncovering large-scale corruption. But the book also details his other side: nationalist, believer in unification of Slavs, but not others, participant in an extreme right-wing annual march. It is a strength of this book that it deals with reaction to the annexation of Crimea, the Moscow demonstrations of different sizes, and extremist violent ethnic outbreaks. It is right up to date in explaining why and how what we see today has happened.

The title of the book, "No Illusions", says it all: the younger generations are not cynics, but idealists who believe that political life will change only in small increments, if it changes for the better anytime soon.

I picked up this book, because I was curious how anybody could profile the future leadership in a country as closed as Russia. I’ve traveled a lot and lived in other countries, but have never been to Russia. This book is eye-opening. This new crop of young people is harsh in some ways and really admirable in others. The harsh part comes from their growing dislike of America and our economic system (I know they’re not the only people these days). The admirable part is different. These young Russians know they can’t get any accurate news at home. So they put in hours every day looking for foreign sources on the internet and comparing all of them. Here, we’re looking more and more only at what we agree with.
The internet emerges as the real center of the book. The planners of huge demonstrations used it amazingly, and crackdowns haven’t crippled them. This book gives so much information, you have the sense of being inside the planning and events—the huge demonstrations, the crackdowns, the annexation of Crimea, and the ethnic violence.

About the Author
Edward Allen, FAIS, has taught for more than thirty-five years as a faculty member at Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and as an invited guest at institutions in the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia. He has designed more than fifty constructed buildings and is the best-selling author of The Architect's Studio Companion, Architectural Detailing, Form and Forces, and Fundamentals of Residential Construction, all published by Wiley.

Joseph Iano is an author, illustrator, and architect whose experience includes professional practice, teaching design and technology in numerous schools of architecture, and work in the construction trades. He has collaborated with Edward Allen on numerous publications over a span of more than twenty-five years. Currently, he heads a Seattle firm that provides technical and quality management consulting to architects and others in the design and construction industry.

Appears to be good - Not for me though

I am currently studying for the ARE (Architectural Registration Examination). I bought this book in hopes to have it help me learn new things with the book it goes with. However, the book does not come with answers and me being self taught, that is pretty much a must for me so that I have the ability to verify my solutions. If you were going to school and had an instructor that could rate your solutions, I am sure that this book would be great. That is why I give it four stars; I really can't complain about it only because it wasn't meant for me. I looked at a few of the questions and instantly realized that the problems were too basic for me, but that could be because I have been in the field of Architecture for about ten years now. If only I knew that it did not come with answers and that the problems were a little more advance, I would have been more happy. This book is more for a student.
