Muzaffer Uysal is a Professor of Tourism in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, Blacksburg, Virginia USA. He received his Ph.D from Texas A&M University, and an MBA from the University of New Haven and a BS in business administration and accounting from Ankara Academy of Economics & Commercial Sciences. He has extensive experience in the travel and tourism field, authoring or co-authoring a significant number of articles in tourism, hospitality and recreation journals, proceedings, book chapters, and four monographs and two books relating to different aspects of tourism and research. He also has conducted workshops, seminars and field research in several countries. Dr. Uysal is a member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, the Academy of Leisure Sciences, and serves as co-editor of Tourism Analysis: An Interdisciplinary Journal. In addition, he sits on the editorial boards of a significant number of journals, including Journal of Travel Research, and Annals of Tourism Research as resource editor. Dr. Uysal received the Award for Research Excellence, Alumni Award for Excellence in International Education, Teaching Excellence Award from Pamplin College of Business, and Outstanding Research Award from College of Human Resources. In addition, he received the 2009 University of Delaware Michael D. Olsen Research Achievement Award in Hospitality and Tourism and a Lifetime Achievement Award in Tourism Research in 2008 from Chinese Tourism Management Association - Taiwan. Dr. Uysal is also featured in Who's Who in America (2001-2010). He worked as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research in the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management at the University of South Carolina from July 2007 to August 2008. His research interests center on tourism demand/supply interaction, tourism marketing, and quality of life research in tourism.

About the Author
Joseph Kerman was a leading musicologist, music critic, and music educator from the 1950s into the 2000s. He conceived Listen together with his wife, Vivian Kerman, and was its original author. From his first book, Opera as Drama (1956), to his last, Opera and the Morbidity of Music (2008), including studies of Bach, Beethoven, William Byrd, concertos, and more, Kerman reshaped our understanding and appreciation of Western Classical music. He was long a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he served two terms as chair of the Music Department.

Gary Tomlinson did the same at the University of Pennsylvania before he moved to Yale University in 2011, where he is now the John Hay Whitney Professor and Director of the Whitney Humanities Center. A former MacArthur Fellow, he has authored books on Claudio Monteverdi, Renaissance musical culture, opera, and the singing rituals of the Aztecs and Incas. His latest book, 1,000,000 Years of Music, describes the evolutionary emergence of music.

Teaching was the heart and soul of Kerman’s musical career, and it remains such in Tomlinson’s. Between them, their wide-ranging course offerings have encompassed harmony and ear-training, opera, world music, popular music, interdisciplinary studies, seminars in music history, criticism, and anthropology and—many times over—Introduction to Music for non-majors.

Tomlinson and Kerman worked together on five editions of Listen. Joseph Kerman died early in 2014, just shy of his 90th birthday, as this edition went to press.

Excellent overview on the historical importance of coal

For those interested in world history, this book fills in many blanks. It is a pleasurable read, full of innumerable factoids and insights about how coal has affected human history. It also adds information about the transition from England to the U.S., one that involves coal, wood and the increasing thrust for power. I've read other books on coal. I don't think that there is a better one than this one.

Things really start with the Chinese, but that is disclosed in a later chapter of the book. For the most part, the book focuses on Britain, then the United States. It tells us that the Romans did a bit of burning coal in Britain, but after they left, centuries of the Dark Ages recorded no further progress. But when England awakes by the 1500s, and begins to burn through most of its wood, and as it adds more and more people, it becomes the first western nation to mine and burn coal in large quantities. This, of course, eventually leads to "a coal-fired industrial revolution."

Interestingly, most of the coal land in England early on was owned by the Catholic Church. But as most coal on the surface was gathered, and getting to the stuff deeper in the ground required a more extensive operation, The Church was not really up to the task. When Henry VIII decided to become the head of the Church of England, that really freed things up. The richest coal lands in the country now became property of the crown. English merchants and industrialists took over from there.

By 1700, the city of Newcastle, in northeastern England, had been producing coal for more than a century. Expanding mines would produce more coal than ever, as rural immigrants came to the area for work. The book paints a horrible picture of the life of the coal miners, who worked in cramped, dark, cold and wet, underground conditions. Tunnels collapsed, explosions occurred, water rushed into the mines, poisonous gas would kill. But the Newcastle coal mines were thought to be inexhaustible, and, per the book, "by 1700, Britain was mining five times more coal than the rest of the world, combined." The demand for it was becoming insatiable.

As the mine shafts and tunnels went deeper underground, water entered and needed to be extracted. This was a tedious task, first done by manpower, then by horsepower. But what got things turned around was the invention of the steam engine.

By the 1760s, steam engines, fueled by coal, itself, were doing the work of fifty horses, each, pumping water out of coal mines all over England and Scotland. Then, James Watt came along to improve the fuel efficiency of the pumps and their horsepower. His engines were suitable, as well, for factories. Between 1780 and 1830, people would move in droves to the cities to join the industrial workforce. Britain was producing 80% of the world's coal, and the epicenter of its output was to become Manchester, with its production of cotton cloth and other finished goods.
Coal was the base of things. It supplied all the fuel for the factories. It was used in the homes for heat, and it was used for cooking, as well. Manchester had factories with more than a thousand workers, each, and the steam engine encouraged increasingly larger economies of scale. Additionally, heated or baked coal was the source of gas lighting, with the gas being piped to the factories to supply bright lighting. The shifts in the mines were twelve hours. There was no place for public parks or recreation areas in Newcastle or Manchester. The air of the cities was thick with smoke. The average life expectancy was only seventeen years.

Coal also fueled the steam engines on the ships that moved coal from its source to the factories. Canals were built, then, eventually, came the railroads. It was all about the movement of coal to the factories. The city of London developed into the hub of Britain's industrial output.
With the population of London going from about 200,000 in 1600 to one million in 1800, it had become the largest city in the world by 1750. It became ten times larger than Manchester. By 1860, it would house three million. But like Manchester, the air of London was foul, with smoke and dust everywhere.

Then came the opportunities of a new land. Masses of British workers saw their escape from the crowded slums of Manchester and London via a voyage across the Atlantic to a land of fresh air and free land. In fact, when arriving in American, the colonists found an endless supply of lumber. This would serve as an early export product on the immigrant ships returning to England, where wood continued to be in short supply. The colonists had no need to search for coal, but, in time, the new nation would realize that below its land was the largest concentrations of coal in the world.

Just as coal fueled the British industrial revolution, so it would in America. The state of Pennsylvania was full of the stuff, as were the Appalachians to the south. The city of Philadelphia would become the nation's largest and richest city. And, just as had been the case in England, the supply of wood would be tested and reduced. With the price of wood rising, Americans turned more and more to coal as a source for power and heat. Canals were built, and the railroads, which first burned wood, made their transition to coal. Huge factories developed, and the population began to shift from small towns to urban centers. Again, the pattern was similar to that of England.

American's second industrial revolution was built on coal. By the late 1890s, America led the world in coal production. (Recently, China has gained this honor.) Britain and Germany fell behind. Few could imagine that progress in the world was not dependent on coal.
The book covers the developments of coal in the world wars, and it tells us of the beginnings of the use of petroleum products. It covers the problems caused by sulfur dioxide and the industry's efforts to reject regulations. But it reminds us that, even today, coal is responsible for the production of half of our nation's electricity. And it tells us of the shift in the major source of America's coal from West Virginia to Wyoming.

There is a chapter on the history of coal in China. Then, the book ends with a summary/review chapter, named, "A Burning Legacy." Again, it tells us that coal took Britain from a rural nation to a world-class commercial power. It made London the largest city in the world. The steam engine and the railway expanded things, as coal provided cheap iron and steel for all kinds of things that advanced the western world.

Take your lumps!

As with most of my reviews I get about a third or halfway through a book and declare it one the best books I could imagine reading; 'Coal: A Human History' is no exception. Just the sheer background of info starting with its formation, discovery and industrialization make it a book not to be put down or taken lightly. The ancillary history lessons one gets from reading 'one subject' books like these are just priceless, in my opinion. The Industrial Revolutions of both England and the U.S. dependencies on coal are explored here in pretty good detail to my liking. At these affordable prices you should pick up a copy of 'Coal' to see for yourself. Barbara Freese has done a very good thing here.

Excellent research, reasoning - not flashy, very solid

There is much less advocacy here than in (the terrible) Coal River or (the good) Moving Mountains, but just as much information, both scientific and historical, primarily the latter. Freese is a former assistant attorney general of Minnesota who reasons rather than assails. She reasons (correctly, I believe) that we humans use energy from the sun to function. "Life on earth is, in short, a vast and sophisticated system for capturing, converting, storing and moving solar energy." As a nascent civilization developed, humans used solar-source energy stored in recently dead plants and animals to power their lives. Those resources limit the population that the earth can support. For example, a small cabin in a temperate climate (like that of West Virginia) uses about 15 cords of firewood per year, which is the output of just under an acre. (One cord equals 128 cubic feet.) In England, where coal was first mined, the forests were vanishing at an alarming rate. Up to that point, we were "spending the interest," the current solar energy converted.

And then came coal, solar-source energy from long-dead plants which had stored energy collected over millions of years, and which let us begin profligately spending the principal. There was (and is) so much coal that until the mid-20th Century, it was considered functionally infinite. Even the oil industry was made possible with the power of coal. The dependence on coal is alarming - fully half of the electricity that we use comes from coal. The environmental effects have crept up to an alarming point. On an average day in the Eastern United States, you can see fourteen miles, due to tiny sulfate particulates that scatter sunlight. Without human-made air pollution, you could see forty-five-plus miles.

Freese discusses fairly the dispute about mountain top/valley fill mining, that it is "pitting those who want to hang on to dwindling coal jobs against those who hate to see their mountains and valleys forever altered."

I was blown away by Master Okawa's spiritual insight!

Having read many a tome on spiritual progression, I was unprepared for the highly enlightened words that Master Ryuho Okawa shared within the pages of the Laws of The Sun. His well thought out theories on human evolution and the creation of the entire universe are a banquet for the starving mind of every person alive today. We all have questions about why we exist and why we are even alive and suffering. These are but the smallest of details that are answered when you choose to read The Laws of The Sun. One concept that truly floored me, was that I could always give all of my love,unconditionally, to others, and never ever worry about receiving love back from them. Because, all of the love and nurturing I would ever need actually comes from God. Not from others. This concept has changed my life forever. I hope you too can read this wonderful book and receive it's powerful gift!

Great Spiritual Guidance and answers to life questions

I love reading this book for many reasons because it has the answers to life's most simple and difficult questions that people have as they live their journey here on Earth along with details about what to expect after our time here on Earth is complete. Our time on Earth is a special gift for a very short period of time in the grand scheme of things, however, the spirit world is eternal and soul training is ongoing. This book is vital to understanding our purpose here on Earth and gives great guidance to help us with our workbook in life lessons and defines the best life practices for us to return to the spirit world with honor, dignity and integrity with a polished soul that shines like a diamond ready for our next mission.

Its design is nice! Its contents are nice! I love it!!
The combination of Buddha’s teaching, the Eight-fold path, and the teaching of love like Jesus is beautiful!!
His idea of the structure of the heavenly world is also far above that of Swedenborg.
In addition, his idea of the world history involved by the God and many angels is interesting.
I feel that his idea can unite all philosophies and religions.
I hope everyone will read at least one time.

This series of conference began in 1983 and is jointly organized by the YLL School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Singapore and the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore). First of all, I want to thank Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman A*STAR who kindly agreed to be our Guest of Honour to give th the Opening Address amidst his busy schedule. I am delighted to report that the 13 ICBME has more than 600 participants from 40 countries. We have received very high quality papers and inevitably we had to turndown some papers. We have invited very prominent speakers and each one is an authority in their field of expertise. I am grateful to each one of them for setting aside their valuable time to participate in this conference. For the first time, the Biomedical Engineering Society (USA) will be sponsoring two symposia, ie “Drug Delivery S- tems” and “Systems Biology and Computational Bioengineering”. I am thankful to Prof Tom Skalak for his leadership in this initiative. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Prof Takami Yamaguchi for organizing the NUS-Tohoku’s Global COE workshop within this conference. Love the first part of the argument, take issue with the second

A rich and stimulating book, and highly recommended, but I want to take issue with the implicit argument that runs throughout. Bowden's argument is that the official narrative of the United States (and Europe before 1492) has played itself out, has shown itself to be corrupt (or worse, empty) at the core. Fine. As some one who grew up during Watergate and the tail end of the Vietnam war, as someone who paid attention to the US's misadventures in Latin America during his college years, as someone who saw a generation of fine young warriors' lives wasted in Iraq after 9/11, and as someone who thinks our overreaching reaction to terrorism is annoying theater, I am ready to agree that the official narrative has a lot of problems. I have no disagreements with Bowden on that. I share his annoyance at the indignities that I suffer when passing through customs upon my return from other countries, I cringe when I see how the war on drugs has given us a militarized police force that abuses its own citizens. And while I am an environmentalist in practice, I am deeply suspicious of many aspects of the movement, especially the notion that we have to somehow save the earth. But Bowden then slips into the second half of his argument, namely that to live in a regime that has lost its legitimacy condemns all citizens to illegitimate lives. To hear Bowden, anyone who isn't a drunken journalist having adventures in Mexico is a mindless office drone, a fat and ignorant consumer, or hopelessly drugged up to avoid seeing how empty and meaningless the official narrative is. But I know plenty of individuals who live passionate, committed, sometimes dangerous lives - and who also happen to be Americans. If there is one thing you can say about living a modern life in America it is that it gives you the freedom to make your own narrative and not get sucked into the official story. I know that sounds like faint praise for America, and it is, to say "the best thing about living in America is you can secretly pursue your own version of happiness and you don't have to subscribe to the party line." But faint praise or not, it is more than was possible in the indigenous cultures that were brutally pushed aside to make way for the American way of life. Indeed I share Bowden's outrage at what wealthy whites did to Native Americans (and to blacks and poor whites) and are still doing. And my outrage is double when I realize that the crimes against indigenous people were justified by apologists who claimed that we were replacing their society with one that was morally superior. When that society turned out to be hollow and corrupt 100 years later, it is quite possible to look back and see the genocide as a double tragedy. But it is also possible to look forward and say that the new society mostly gets out of people's way and makes space for them to find and pursue their own passion. Small comfort perhaps, but I'll take it. In fact, a strong thread of American culture that has been present since colonial times is the celebration of this emptiness at the center, this radical freedom that lets people form small groups that make their own meaning. Its not much, but look at the situation in Europe that this desire sprang from. In short, it is possible to accept the first part of Bowden's argument - that the official US culture we live in is corrupt at its heart (or worse, empty) without accepting the second argument - namely that we all must derive our meaning from our culture, thus becoming drugged, fat, mindless workaholic zombies. Living an authentic life is not easy and not for everyone but has it ever been? The best that can be said about Bowden's book is that he sets up the argument and provides a few clues about how to find that authenticity yourself - or rather, he tells you what fake stuff to avoid. Worth reading.

A wild ride

I'd be lying if I said this was an easy read, but Bowden warns the reader from the beginning that he travels fast. The subject matter is more than brutal and disturbing. It is enough to make you regret that you are a human being, but I am not sure that Bowden's goal is too make you feel hopeless. In many ways he is optimistic about the future in spite of the bloody past he graphically offers to the reader. He wants to move beyond explaining the past because as he says, "What is explained can be denied but what is felt cannot be forgotten." It would be impossible to read this book and not feel something, but the bigger sin in Bowden's eyes would be forgetting what you felt. The rawness and 85 mph pace of the prose alone makes this a difficult book to forget, but the subject matter and content moves you to question the deeper issues that plague a society that has forgotten how to feel, how to love, and how to live. I found portions of the book difficult to grasp and the book is mentally and emotionally exhausting in many ways. This does not diminish the importance of Bowden's message, but as a reader you need to be prepared to spend some time digesting the material.

Christophe Jaffrelot is research director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris and teaches South Asian politics and history at Sciences Po (Paris), where he served as director from 2000 to 2008.
