You'll be so glad you read it

I've given copies of this book to dozens of people. The writing sings. She was funny, clear, and beautiful. Surely she's an angel now, because she gave the world such a perfect gift: This book.

If you haven't read it yet, I envy you. The first read is astounding. On the other hand, I enjoyed reading it for the hundredth time, long ago. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, and are reading it for the first time on a rainy day, prepare to be transported ... and astounded.

About the Author

George S. Morrison, Ed.D., is professor of early childhood education at the University of North Texas where he teaches early childhood courses to undergraduate and graduate students.  Professor Morrison's accomplishments include a Distinguished Academic Service Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and an Outstanding Service and Teaching Award from Florida International University.  His books include Early Childhood Education Today, Tenth Edition; and Teaching in America, Fourth Edition; Education and the Development of Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers;  The World of Child Development; The Contemporary Curriculum; and Parent Involvement in the Home, School, and Community.

      Dr. Morrison is a popular author, speaker, and presenter.  He is Senior Contributing Editor for the Public School Montessorian and contributes his opinions and ideas to a wide range of publications.  His speaking engagements and presentations focus on the future of early childhood education, the changing roles of early childhood teachers, and the influence of contemporary educational reforms, research, and legislation on teaching and learning. 

      Dr. Morrison's professional and research interests include integrating best practices into faith-based practices; developing programs for young children and their families with an emphasis on readiness and learning; and the influences of families on children's development.  He is also involved in providing technical assistance about graduate and undergraduate teacher education programs and early childhood practices to government agencies, university faculty, and private and public agencies in Thailand, Taiwan, and China.

Actually enjoyed reading this for class

I am an Interdisciplinary Studies, Education, Major currently and I was required to purchase this book. I bought it off of Amazon which was a great price and got here in a timely manner. I am 20 years old, and I really can say I actually enjoyed reading this textbook. I didn't find it a hard read like many other textbooks. It had a lot of great information, from the various people who contributed to Education, to the Theories, helpful tips and hints, and just a bunch of great stuff that was worth taking notes on. I really would have liked to keep this, but because I am a college student my campus was buying back the book and I needed the money! I highlighted all over the place in this book and took notes from every single chapter. Throught the textbook there are personal stories as well as "Technology Tie-Ins" that gives you tips on how to become up to date with the technology of today and how you can integrate that into your classroom. Some of the words they marked as vocabulary I found to be common sense, but other than that the vocabulary was great. It is neatly displayed in the outside margins on the pages which I liked very much so I could actually read the definition in the chapter and didn't have to go search for it in the back of the book. The print size was nice, didn't find it hard to read. It was neatly put together, just a great textbook I think. Any Early Childhood teacher or teacher in training should get this book! It was very informative and had lots of great tips on things to do in the classroom and how to include parents, the community, and your students. I also liked how it said that the focus in school is a lot on the standardized tests (which I don't agree on) but that if you are a great teacher, you will FIND ways to make learning fun and also relevant!

About the Author
A Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Willa Cather s work was profoundly influenced by her upbringing in rural Nebraska. During her young adulthood Cather proved herself intelligent and capable, initially training for a career as a medical doctor, but discovered a love of, and talent for, writing while attending the University of Nebraska. Following graduation, Cather worked as a journalist for several women s magazines before becoming a high school teacher; an opportunity work as an editor at McClure s provided Cather with her first chance to publish as the magazine serialized her first novel, Alexander s Bridge, to critical acclaim. This was soon followed by works that have since become best-loved American classics, including My ?ntonia, The Song of the Lark, and her Pulitzer-Prize winner, One of Ours. Cather died in 1947 at the age of 73.

A glimpse of Cather's tastes in literature

The six essays Willa Cather gathered into this small book in 1936 give the reader a good idea of her philosophy of literature and also provide anecdotes about several literary figures she admired or met during her career. She writes about Flaubert (or, more precisely, Cather's friendship with his niece), Mrs. James T. Fields (the widow of the co-owner of the famed publisher Ticknor and Fields), Sarah Orne Jewett, Thomas Mann, and Katherine Mansfield. An additional piece, entitled "The Novel Demeuble" (which might be translated as "The Novel Unplugged") objects to the excesses in the fiction written by her contemporaries.
The title of the collection refers to Cather's lament that most of these writers would no longer be of interest to those then under forty years of age, and there is certainly an "old-fashioned," even prudish, stance throughout. She dismisses the realists for their "cataloguing of a great number of material objects, in explaining mechanical processes, the methods of operating manufactories and trades, and in minutely and unsparingly describing physical sensations. . . . Have such things any proper place in imaginative art?" Although she mentions only Balzac, she clearly has in mind such American writers as Dreiser, Lewis, and Upton Sinclair. And she has no brook for Lawrence, whose characters are "dehumanized by a laboratory study of the behavior of the bodily organs under sensory stimuli." Cather didn't always feel this way; thirty-five years earlier she wrote glowingly of Frank Norris (in an essay not included here), praising the descriptions of workaday environment in "McTeague" as "convincing proof of power, imagination and literary skill." Apparently, Cather eventually believed that the scales tipped too far toward realism--or her tastes simply changed.
The most interesting, and breeziest, piece concerns Madame Grout, who was Flaubert's niece and lifelong correspondent (the "Caro" in his "Letters to My Niece Caroline"); Cather manages simultaneously to provide a touching account of this aging lady and to instill an increased appreciation of Flaubert's achievement. Probably the key to understanding Cather's work is her ode to Jewett, to whom she was much indebted and whose work she championed to the reading public throughout her life. The weakest essay, it must be noted, is Cather's review of Thomas Mann's "Joseph" novels. She did not live to see the fourth book published, so the essay was premature, and her judgment that these books were Mann's greatest is hard to support. (Dare I say that it would be far more fascinating to know what she thought of "Death in Venice"?) Even here, however, she captures Mann's essence--his "rich deliberateness which is never without intensity and deep vibration." All the essays, then, will provide Cather fans with a glimpse of the art underlying the fiction she herself published in the late 1920s and the 1930s--from "Death Comes for the Archbishop" to "Lucy Gayheart."

Cather's essays are as sublime as her novels

William Gass recently observed that participants in contemporary writing workshops are not interested in literature. They are interested in writing, in "expressing a self as shallow as a saucer." Willa Cather was interested in literature, in art, in permanence, and the essays in Not Under Forty memorably illustrate her beliefs. Her seriousness and integrity are very much needed in an era when acclaimed young novelists use their acknowledgements to thank Mom for reading their manuscripts and correcting their punctuation.

Good but not as good as her novels

I agree with the first reviewer that the first essay in the book is the best and most interesting. Cather's views on realism were interesting, and she makes some important arguments against using too much realistic detail in fiction. Nevertheless, comparing these essays to her novels, or even comparing them to other well known essays, they come off as second rate. I am glad I read the book, but it is not one I will read again.

Great resource

I acquired Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" more than 40 years ago when I was a graduate student in philosophy at Johns Hopkins. (My, how times have changed. The individual volumes have a prices on the cover of anywhere from 95¢ to $1.25.) I have used this multivolume history frequently ever since. Whether I have wanted to find information on some aspect or other of the thought of a particular philosopher or when I have wanted to get an overview of a particular period in the history of philosophy, I have turned to Copleston. There is no philosopher of any consequence or any aspect of that philosopher's thought that is too minor to not at least receive a mention by Copleston. His knowledge of the history of philosophy is encyclopedic. While I also highly recommend using primary-source material to gain a fuller knowledge of the thought of any philosopher, Copleston is a great starting point if one wants an initial overview before plunging into a philosopher's works in more depth. Of all the histories of philosophy available, this is certainly one of the best and the most complete.

Watch what you pay

This book, in it various revisions, is one of the most important works on the internal combustion engine written over the +100 years the engine type has been with us. It is excellently written and very accessible, and cannot be recommended enough.

A suggestion: Like me you may want to own an original, however the Ricardo engineering company (set up by the author) is retailing a re-print of the 5th edition for £35 on line. Please look at [...]->what we do->Information services->estore for details. The cover of the re-print looks identical to that shown on this Amazon page. The re-print is excellent (I bought one) and includes the large fold-out engine cross-section drawings so beloved of engineers.

Required reading for all piston-engine enthusiasts.

The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine by Sir Harry R. Ricardo, LL.D., F. R. S.
Sir Harry Ricardo was one of the most influential piston-engine researchers in Great Britain, and probably the world. His efforts resulted in the very advanced engines which powered Britain's aircraft during WW II, and have influenced engine design ever since. This book lucidly chronicles the fascinating highlights of Ricardo's achievements, and is utterly indespensible for anyone interested in appreciating the engineering fundamentals of piston-engine design and development.
Ricardo's early efforts in characterizing the detonation properties of fuels have given us our present-day octane ratings, and their measurement. His later research and development work, summarized in this book, resulted in engine designs considered to represent the most advanced aircraft engines made. He had even more ideas to try, but the rise of turbine engines put an end to the development of high-output piston engines for aircraft.
That this richly informative and historical book is out of print is highly regrettable. It is most definitely worth attempting to locate used, and will provide a wealth of insight and historical perspective. Highly recommended.

At last a Craniosacral book that puts it all together with clarity

I gave this book a 5 star rating . I gave it this number because it is one of the very few books on Craniosacral Therapy that addresses a number of topics that often are not often discussed and should be because of their practical importance in the clinic .
The word integration says it all . For many years the great Myofascial Release teacher John Barnes has long stated that CST is best combined with Myofascial release for better results . This is not covered in a lot of CST books. This book has considerable chapter on this subject and demonstrates it's relativity to good CST work . In other words for treating a number of clinic problems the treatment must be integrated and a variety of approaches may be applicable .
There are great chapters on topics such as T4 syndrome and autonomic nervous system integration. These subjects may be touched upon by other CST books but not in a clear or succinct way that is depicted in this book . The chapters are clear and set out in a logical manner and a great deal of effort has been put into describing how the practitioner should set the scene to approach treating clients . Attlee has pitched this book as a book that can be used as a foundation primer for anyone starting learning CST work. I like the book because he covers different aspects of the work such as biomechanics,energy , emotional ,Fascial and biodyamic. He is not just stuck in one approach .
I would thoroughly recommend this book as the first book for a beginning CST therapist or student and as a good review for those who who are practitioners . Certainly is is going to be on our required reading list for our Craniosacral Therapy Academy of Australia
