Still a key to new ways of thinking for public managers

Mark Moore postulates creating public value as a mode of practical reasoning and an alternative way of conceiving of the public policy challenge in relation with the public administrative enterprise. Moore offers a notion of strategic management in government as a way of linking the traditional study of ends in public policy with the traditional study of means in public administration. Moore postulates a strategic triangle, arguing that a useful conception of public value can be envisioned by managers if they integrate (1) substantive judgments of what would be valuable and effective (2) a diagnosis of political expectations (and legal parameters) and (3) hard-headed calculations of what is operationally feasible. The text articulates ways of thinking about and enacting public value in government, considers approaches and techniques for managing upwards toward politics and downwards toward organizational operations in relation to a wide variety of case studies, and concludes with a consideration of what consciousness or temperament is required of public managers if they are to be successful in managing, effectively and democratically.
The text is exceptionally well-written and is equally accessible to undergraduate students, graduate students, and practitioners. It remains a fundamental resource and an invaluable key to new ways of thinking for policy makers and administrators today.

Excellent and comprehensive

An excellent overview of the public manager as a creator of value. Moore does an excellent job drawing parellels to the private sector to illustrate how public managers need to address the needs of their consumers by creating value. The only downside of the text is the high level style of the writing, which sometimes makes it difficult to follow.

This book is an excellent source for practising public managers and academics and students who interest in public administration. As time passed, people, their representatives and public managers change or need to change their paragigms. Moore indicates the reason why public organizations must change. Organizational posture and position always must be in accordance with external environment. From the perspective of Moore, public managers must move away from the technicians that work to realize the goals imposed by elected officials with the maximum efficiency to the strategists that analyze the environment and find new ways for creating more value for people. This does not mean bureaucrats are completely free and can think and do whatever they desire. We know this situation points to the demolishing of the democracy. But Moore stresses that public officials must be made accountable for the results and all the time they must be oversighted by citizens, representatives, press, interest groups and public at large. This book is not a How-to-do guide. But we can adapt the principles proposed to the unique circumstances of our organizations.

A Masochistic Pleasure

You can tell when someone writes “junkie” and doesn’t know what they are talking about. And this is where U.V. Ray’s book Spiral Out succeeds on all fronts; straight ahead, like a diamond bullet to the skull, it is as simplistic and real as it gets. And although it acts effectively as a diatribe on the unrelenting tedium of life, a kick to the shins of a homogenized, pastel existence, it never has time to become repetitious or boring itself; a brisk shockwave, like being tossed into a pool of ice water, and over in an instant.

Spiral Out follows the life of degenerate, privilege born Karzoso, a man for whom the only consequence of his messed up life is the curse of living itself. Karzoso is a user, a delinquent, a lonely man; his ponderous mind and natural disconnect from the people around him has driven him to the extreme height of boredom, only able to be treated by drugs and alcohol, and only for short bursts of debilitating misery.

In the opening chapter of the succinct and relatively short story, Karzoso is calling his fathers “associate” to figure out how to dispose of a body. And as the books title implies, the story spirals out of control from there, always on a downward slope to oblivion.

From the second we are introduced to Karzoso and his temporary stream of compadres that he talks about through the story, it is battered into our heads that life is meaningless. That the hands that wrote his story, that the hands that write this review, will eventually turn to dust. There are no moments of ecstasy, of relief from the grey city blocks that trap Karzoso in a prison of his own self-deprecation; only a bitter admittance that life is not always ugly, that moments of joy do exist, but that they are as fleeting as stoned love making in the threshold of a shop, quickly halted by the metaphorical police officer of happiness whenever real elation threatens to ensue.

I think everyone can relate to the Karzoso when they are at their worst. We’ve all been on the self-destructive bender. Many have considered driving straight ahead into traffic in their darker moments, and some actually do. I haven’t personally been to meet a drug dealer named Priest to pick up my drugs, and I haven’t blown the head off of a roofie dealing amputee, so the depths of Karzosos’ own self destruction and nihilism are not always totally relatable, but I think any intelligent person has a little bit of Karzoso in them. Everyone is a bit of a miserable scumbag sometimes, because that’s just the reality of living.

Where U.V. shines in his writing, and what separates the story of Karzoso from a bad post-rock lyric and propels it into respectable literature is his poetic, free form style. He doesn’t properly punctuate, he doesn’t make a distinction between dialogue and narration in the traditional way. The guy bleeds style from every whiskey filled orifice, but he does it with a certainty and edge that makes it respectable, that makes it his, and I never had difficulty digesting it all.

The book is not for the faint of heart, but the kind of wuss who hangs around the grocery store book shelf is never gonna find his work anyways. It’s a little Fear and Loathing without the hippy subtext, a little Naked Lunch without the incomprehensible meandering of a psychotic junkie. Not knowing U.V. too well apart from what he presents in interviews and things, it’s hard to say how much of the story really hits close to home for him, but you can’t make up all this stuff without real life experience, so I suspect he’s a man that’s very much been there and done that, and that’s what makes it so thoroughly convincing.

Spiral Out was a good read. In most cases, I would normally say that “it ended too quickly”, but the fact is, I absorbed enough of Karzosos hatred for life to get my fill. It was the literary equivalent of a smack to the jaw, and it made for two very satisfying nights of reading. Some things are better when they are cut short, much like the life of a parasitic junkie. Spiral Out roars along at a consistent pace, and the cord is pulled before we are truly ready to move on from Karzoso. But ultimately, that is why the story is memorable and has such a gut wrenching impact. Like the pang of a heroine addict never getting his fill, I was left a little sleepless by the end, wanting more, but relieved that the ride was over all the same.

Spiral Out is a masochistic pleasure. It will intimidate the sheltered, and will resonate with those who have seen the ugliness of life. And although the events that take place throughout the story can be a little unbelievable at times, that is precisely why they work and do not degenerate into a cheap caricature of lowlife; because reality is a lot more surreal than we give it credit for, and the world is a lot more decrepit than most of us would like to imagine.

Alessandro Vernet has been involved with web and XML technologies from day one. Prior to co-founding Orbeon, he worked at Symantec Corporation as part of the VisualCafe team, working on the next-generation RAD for web applications. He is the co-author of The Best of Java, received the 1998 Logitech Award for his master’s thesis on Jaskell, and is one of the architects of the open source Orbeon PresentationServer (OPS) project. His current interests lie in XML technologies and web applications. He recently implemented an XForms engine using Ajax/JavaScript, co-authored the XML Pipeline Language specification published by the W3C, and is active in two W3C Working Groups: the XForms and XML Processing Model Working Groups. He holds an MS/CS from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Erik Bruchez has extensive experience in the software industry as a software architect and consultant. As a former employee of Symantec Corporation, he contributed to the VisualCafe for Java product line. In 1999, he co-founded Orbeon, Inc. (www.orbeon.com), where he is now an architect of Orbeon PresentationServer (OPS), an open source web platform for form-based applications that builds on technologies such as XForms and Ajax. Erik participates in the W3C’s XForms and XML Processing Model working groups. He is the author of articles about web applications and XML technologies and has been a speaker at conferences such as JavaOne, ObjectWebCon, and XTech. Erik holds an MS/CS degree from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He spends most of his time between Switzerland and California and can be reached by email at ebruchez@orbeon.com.

Joe Fawcett started programming in the seventies and briefly worked in IT after leaving full-time education. He then pursued a more checkered career before returning to software development in 1994. In 2003 he was awarded the title of Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in XML for community contributions and technical expertise. He currently works in London as senior developer for FTC Kaplan Ltd, a leading international provider of accountancy and business training.

Danny Ayers is a freelance developer, technical author, and consultant specializing in cutting-edge Web technologies. His motivation is the belief that with a little encouragement, the Web can be significantly more useful and interesting than it is now. He’s been a blogger for some five years (http://dannyayers.com), with a tendency to post material relating to the Semantic Web or cat photos.

Technical Editor Micah Dubinko is an experienced software architect and writer working for the Mobile Platform group at Yahoo! Inc. He has been programming since the third grade—at the time on a computer with only 2K of memory. Micah served as an editor and author of the W3C XForms specification, publishing a book in print and online, and eventually being awarded the InfoWorld Innovators 2004 award for his effort. Here we go again, another book from Wrox press written by multiple authors from multiple disciplines. Professional Web 2.0 Programming is another deception for me in that it only provides high level details about web 2.0 and the book contains several chapters of subjects already mentioned over and over again in other books already. Let's start with Chapter 2. Here we have an overview of HTML, CSS, XHTML and DOM. I mean, why is this mentioned here? Is this a WEB 2.0 book or Web 1.0 book? Chapter 3 is about JavaScript and Ajax. What a waste, I already have a JavaScript book no need for half a chapter on JavaScript undefined objects. The other half is about high level design philosophies about Ajax. If this is what is referred to as a professional book on programming I'm really disappointed. Chapter 5 is a rehash of XSL with a mix of SVG. Chapter 6 is a waste of time about rich client applications providing little value to the reader. Chapter 7 is a rehash of the HTTP protocol URI. Chapter 8 is a rehash of XML. Chapter 9 talks about Syndication. Ha! Finally 15 pages worth of WEB 2.0 information via a high level definition of the RSS format. Chapter 11 is about web services, a rehash of other books on the subject.

A little bit of everything leads to nothing

As per the other reviewer, this book uses one chapter for each topic: eg. HTML/CSS, Javascript, Design Principles, and sometimes not even a whole chapter eg, Chapter 5 includes SVG, XSLT, XPATH, XFORMS, and the discussion about HTML 5 and XHTML 2.0.

Each section only really makes sense if you are already familiar with the topic. If you are familiar with the topic, then the relevant section will only bore you. The areas where you are not so familiar will confuse you.

It seems this book is an attempt to explain Web 2.0 technologies in a really short sharp fashion, from the beginning. Unfortunately, each topic is worthy of its own book. Shrinking 10+ books down to one doesn't work very well.

However, I do think an advanced book that assumes knowledge of these technologies and explains how to integrate them together would be cool.

Terrible book

Basically this book will hardly teach you anything you don't already know. They assume prior knowledge about almost every single topic they cover. They say in the preface that this book is not about java-script DOM, XML, AJAX or any specific technology for that matter. This book is more like some overview of all the technoligies that are used in Web 2.0 sites but none of them are explained in a way that someone without prior knowledge would understand. This book may only be useful for you if you are an experienced web developer with thorough knowledge in both backend and frontend technologies and just looking for some better practices and tips.
Unfortunately there aren't so many people that fit that description.

What a lovely (& sexy, of course) ending to this wonderful series!! So happy we got to know Alexia better, as well as (oh, so very HOT) Sebastian; and to see this entire group of friends find their futures! I'm so very sorry to have to say goodbye to them, but I am glad to have had a glimpse into their lives, and I'll sleep well tonight assured that their futures are bright because they have each other to lean on. Thank you Dani for giving me a seat on their journey!

Kudos to Ms. Lovell this book was well worth the wait. I enjoyed the whole Sexy series wish it didn't have to end. The way she started with Alexia and Sebastian story and ended with beautiful wedding of Bea and Dainel. Can't wait to see what she has in store. She has a true fan in me.

Coren received a good deal of media attention several years ago when he and a colleague published a paper claiming that left-handed people die at a considerably younger age, on average, than their right-handed counterparts. The current book explores the social consequences and biological causes of sinistrality in the process of explaining these findings, disproving some widely held myths along the way (e.g., most southpaws are not "right-brained"; handedness is probably not inherited). The book is readable without oversimplifying the topic, and is highly recommended for public and academic libraries on the basis of its own merits, the interest it will generate, and the fact that it is the only serious and up-to-date treatment of the topic for the general reader.

All hands are equal,but one hand is more equal than the other

Well well, there is some very interesting stuff here. Why are only around 10% of the population left handed? Is this genetic or learned? And what does this mean for tool making, writing, driving, accident proneness, societal prejudice, sporting pursuits, and general living as a left hander? You might also be interested to know that around 20% of people are left footed, and around 40% of people are left eyed. Also more woman are right handed than men. And then there are the mixed types, the ambidextorous, and also those who mix different activities and their handedness- say writing and throwing. A surpising number of people are actually mixed types, and this increases for footedness and eyedness.
This book is a good overview of various statistics, and what it means to live as a left hander in a right handed world. The author has conducted many years research into various studies, from identical twin studies, to family studies, to genes and learning, to the way tools are designed, and how left handers cope with these sorts of things in general. Bias, prejudice, and general policies are discussed, both historically and in recent times. (Everyone knows the old rap over the knuckle for left handed school students several generations ago, but where have we come from there?).
The author mentions his university in the 1990s where all the chairs in his lecture theatre have right-sided writing areas. I also remember smudging most of my first ink pen writing in primary school-left handed writers will know what I am talking about!).
One of the best things about this book is the detail. Not only is there analyses of handedness, but as mentioned, footedness, eyeness, and even earness. Which ear do you listen to your watch with? Also, mixed handed types are discussed, along with various sports, and degree of lefthandness (and right handedness!) in each, and where it may be useful to be more of a mixed type for some sports (eg soccer with mixed footedness, and basketball with mixed handedness). Readers are given personal questionaires to determine their general level of left or right handedness, footedness, earness, and eyeness. Links with brain states and brain areas, personality types, tendancy to certain careers and so on is also discussed. Famous lefties are also listed.
The book is a must for the curious leftie, and for those who are interested in where this curious, and rather little studied aspect of humanity is taking us.

Very concrete and helpful as well as scientifically sound

I learned a great deal about myself reading this book and I think even came away with higher self esteem. The author is a leading scientist studying left-handedness and explains why media and "common knowledge" information and facts on the subject are often incorrect. The writing style is factual and informative but also entertaining. You learn about the problems of left-handed presidents as well as your own or a friend's problems and why there are fewer left-handed older people than younger ones. I'm very grateful to the author for explaining to me why I had so much trouble in dancing class as a teenager; I found his answer to that puzzle much more help than all the dermatologists my mother took me to for my acne. I wish I could have read this book earlier in my life.

Interesting issues that are worthy of further investigation

This book doesn't tell left-handers how best to live in a right-handers' world, but it doesn't purport to. It does, however, live up to its title. Coren presents a range of very interesting theories and conclusions about left-handedness. Crucially, he also describes the actual studies and presents their results, and is fairly clear about when something's just a theory and why one might believe it, so you get to see some raw facts and judge for yourself. I'm strongly left-handed and am not in the least bit offended by the idea that it could have possibly been caused by something going slightly wrong somewhere. Some of the theories did actually explain a few things about my family and myself quite well, which was an added bonus.

Mary Soto is an assistant professor in the Teacher Education Department at California State University East Bay in Hayward, California. Mary works with teacher candidates as well as teachers working toward their master's degree. Her research interests include using authentic texts and project based learning to teach emergent bilinguals and long-term English learners. Mary has been a frequent invited speaker, and she presents at international, national, state, and regional conferences including Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE), and and the California Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL). Mary has written and published a book chapter entitled "A Self-Study of Teacher Educator Practice: Strategies and Activities to Use with Authentic Texts," a monograph entitled "Using Novels to Engage Secondary Emergent Bilinguals in Reading" published by Texas Women's University, and several journal articles including "Teaching the Academic Language and Concepts of Language Arts to Secondary Long-Term English Learners" in the NABE Journal of Research and Practice, "Long Term English Learners: Who are they? How can teachers help? In Secondary Accents: The Newsletter of the TESOL Secondary Interest Section and "In for the Long Haul" in Language: The Journal of Communication and Education.

Ann Ebe began her work in education as a Spanish/ English bilingual elementary school teacher in California and later worked in bilingual schools in Arizona as a bilingual literacy specialist and as an administrator. She then went on to spend four years in Hong Kong as the Associate Principal and Literacy Specialist for the Hong Kong International School where she worked with an international group of teachers and students. Upon returning to the United States, Ann served as Assistant Professor in the Graduate College of Education of the University of Massachusetts Boston prior to her work at Hunter College. Until the fall of 2015 when she moved to Mexico City, Ann was an Associate Professor of Literacy Education and the Director of Bilingual Education Programs in the Graduate School of Education at Hunter College in New York City. Ann was recently awarded a grant from the Brooke Astor Fund for New York City Education to work with schools in East Harlem to improve literacy education for emergent bilingual students. She also worked extensively in schools throughout New York through the City University of New York - New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals (CUNY - NYSIEB). This State funded grant aims to improve education for emergent bilingual students through helping schools value bilingualism as a resource and develop multilingual ecologies. Ann's research interests include exploring translanguaging in classrooms, the reading process of bilingual students, and the ways in which teachers can support their literacy development. Ann has published book chapters and articles on these topics She presents regularly at both national and international conferences. Her work with teachers in the United States and abroad involves developing and implementing language arts curriculum to put literacy theory into practice. Ann has been invited to share her research with teachers and administrators in Norway, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. She now lives in Mexico City. Her book on the teaching of reading, published by Heinemann, is entitled Insight from the Eyes: The Science of Effective Reading Instruction.

Loving it!

Well, first thing first, when reading an Harlequin comic, my expectations are never really high: it's generally a ~130 pages long comic book and an adaptation of an existing novel.
But as you must suspect, it's just impossible to enter in too much details in so little pages and in comic form no less.
THAT SAID, I personally enjoy them and have a fun time reading them, and actually own quite a few, some more entertaining than others, some kind of a disappointment...some really good!

This one is definitely one of the best Harlequin comics whether in drawing or story, I was surprised to see there were as many pages as others titles because I felt like I was reading a lot more material. I really love historical romance and this one was wonderful~ It actually made me wanna read the novel version! (but I couldn't find it D:)

Very simple and not too dramatic. It does make you want to read the actual book. I like it because it was like a preview to what the book would actually be about. I would recommend it to those who just wants to know what the book is about but doesn't have the time to read the whole thing.

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.
