About the Author
Barry Evans is head of the Communications Systems Research Centre at the University of Surrey, the UK's largest academic group in mobile and satellite communications. He is well known in the field of satellite communications, having made innovations in SCPC-FM, on-board processing, dual polarisation antennas and propagation, new orbit constellations, speech coding and multiple access. He is the founder of the International Journal of Satellite Communications and has been the chairman of the IEE Vacation School on Satellite Communications since its inception in 1984. He is the author of three books and over 400 published papers.

Want to size that terminal correctly?

This book has excellent treatment of antennas, modulation, coding and link budgets. If you need to learn how you should size a terminal for a given type of service than this is where you will find the answer or at least how to get the calculations correct.
I find this book on more satellite system engineers shelves all over the world than any other I know of on this subject. Its a great 'look up' text for those technical answers you should know but....

Smooth Beatles melodies

You probably want the album to this collection, as the CD that comes with it is largely instructive and not a complete playing of the songs.
These are largely smooth renditions of Beatles' melodies and not too advanced or harmonized to scare off an experienced fingerstyle player who can play somewhat advanced solos. Three are in standard tuning and except for "Eleanor Rigby", the rest are in DADGAD tuning.
If you like the album and can play some fingerstyle,(say "Stairway to Heaven") this is a very good collection of fingerstyle solo guitar music.

About Otto Donath           
Otto Donath was born in Berlin in 1898. During World War II, he worked as a photographer for the propaganda company of the Wehrmacht company 689. After 1945, he took pictures first for the Soviet army, later for a number of newspapers and magazines in East Berlin, among them Neue Berliner Illustriete and Für Dich. He died in 1971, in Berlin.
 
About Peter Kroh
Peter Kroh, born in 1950, has worked as a photo reporter for a number of East German newspapers, among them Junge Welt in Berlin, and Thüringer Allgemeine. In 1995, after the Berlin Wall had come down,  he moved to the German capital to work for Berliner Kurier. Kroh became the photo editor of the paper. Today, he is retired. He lives in a small town near Berlin.

Berlin, in May 1945: World War II is over in Europe. The Soviet army has conquered Berlin, a city reduced to rubble, and now under martial law. Soldiers from America, Great Britain, and France will move in a few months later. Broken tanks and makeshift barricades are littering the streets, tenements and churches were turned into bombed-out shells, tunnels have been flooded and train tracks destroyed. German soldiers are been hauled off to POW-camps in Siberia, while old men are cutting up dead horses for food, women are trading clothing for survival, and children are left to their own devices in the ruins. And the victors, Russian soldiers of the Red Army, look as much exhausted as the defeated. These rare pictures have been taken by photographers of the Red Army and by Germans in their employ immediately after the surrender. They are published for the first time in the United States, allowing a glimpse into an era of destruction and desperation, but also survival and rebuilding.

Poor Quality-Waste of Money

The book arrived in the mail today and I have gone over it with a fine tooth comb. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED. First of all the quality of the photo's in the paperback book are TERRIBLE. There is nothing in this book you can not see a better and clearer picture of on-line. I urge you to save your money and avoid this book like the plaque. Ordering this was a complete waste of money. Like I say you can see the same pictures on line. Cheers Sincerely Bill McFarlane

Lost (and now found) images of battered Berlin

It's astonishing that those photos never surfaced until now, and have only been found a few years ago in a hidden drawer in Berlin. This is a book that shows you a part of history you have never seen before. For instance, I was not really aware that all of Berlin was occupied by only the Russians for quite some time. The U.S. Army only came later. The sheer level of destruction of the city put 9/11 into perspective. There's also a lot of information about the last few battles of World War II, and the inner workings of how the Allies came to their decisions. Another part of the history that we don't hear—or see— much about is the huge masses of refugees, not only in 1945, but for years to afterwards. A must-read for every history buff!

Ten chapters of large black and white photographs. Each with a one page introduction setting the scene and giving context. Each picture has a one sentence caption explaining on obvious details (e.g. location) or context (relevant statistics, etc.)

The pictures are impressive. The show the devastation of war. They show the victorious Red Army. They show defeated German soldiers. And they show civilians trying to survive.

If you're interested in the history of the Second World War - especially the battle for Berlin - you should check out this book.

About the Author
John P. McKay (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is professor emeritus at the University of Illinois. He has written or edited numerous works, including the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize-winning book Pioneers for Profit: Foreign Entrepreneurship and Russian Industrialization, 1885-1913.  Clare Haru Crowston (Ph.D., Cornell University) teaches at the University of Illinois, where she is currently associate professor of history. She is the author of Fabricating Women: The Seamstresses of Old Regime France, 1675-1791, which won the Berkshire and Hagley Prizes. She edited two special issues of the Journal of Women's History, has published numerous journal articles and reviews, and is a past president of the Society for French Historical Studies.
 Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison) taught first at Augustana College in Illinois, and since 1985 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she is currently UWM Distinguished Professor in the department of history. She is the coeditor of the Sixteenth Century Journal and the author or editor of more than twenty books, most recently The Marvelous Hairy Girls: The Gonzales Sisters and Their Worlds and Gender in History. She is the former Chief Reader for Advanced Placement World History.Joe Perry (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is Associate Professor of modern German and European history at Georgia State University. He has published numerous articles and is author of Christmas in Germany: A Cultural History (2010). His current research interests focus on issues of consumption, gender, and popular culture in West Germany and Western Europe after World War II.

DORIS WAGNER serves as CEO of Global Harvest Ministries in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I Love this book

This book goes into areas that I have yet to explore. I cannot put this book down. I am reading this book line by line. I have read other books on the subject of deliverence and this is one book that puts it all together. I am now reading Bitter Root Judgements by Cindy Jacobs and the information is eyeopening. Many people don't realize that these types of Judgements can bring about stigmatation, oppression and even cursing family members up to the fourth generation. This book has had a great impact on my personal walk with the Lord as he opens the doors in my life for deliverence and cleansing. I highly recommend this book to everyone Christian and non Christian alike to realize there is more power to obtain through inner healing and deliverence. This book also instructs one on how to properly pray inner healing and deliverence for others in need. I say Bravo to Doris M.Wagner for compiling comprehensive topics and highly repected Ministers of the Gospel into one book.

An excellent (but damning) depiction of the situation in South Africa, showing the reader the inevitable extermination of other cultures by anglification. I think it would even be better when it is released in Afrikaans by Dr. Roodt later.

Absolutely Fantastic

John Le Carre has the gift of storytelling. To me, he is the best espionage writer alive today. Most of the espionage writers put all the emphasis on the events whereas the main theme of Le Carre's books has always been characters. Le Carre does not write breakneck thrillers. He writes characters, lively and human. And that's why when you read a Le Carre book, a year down the road, you can't recall the story but you can easily recall the characters of the story. He is the creator of many memorable characters and Barley Blair is one of them.
Barley is not a hero, not even a patriot. He is a careless publisher, a jazz player and a chess fan. He is not a spy. He is pushed into the espionage game because of his drunken exchange of thoughts with a Russian scientist, another of Le Carre's memorable characters. Barley has reluctantly agreed to play the part of a courier and agent-runner by British spymasters and on his arrival in Moscow, he falls in love with a girl, who very much like Barley himself, is pushed into the spy game.
Barley soon reaches a point where he has to decide whom to betray. The girl he loves or his country. To me, that is the climax of the novel, the classical dilemma.
And dilemma it is. Here is Barley Blair, the main character, forming one part of the triangle, who is not a spy, doesn't even want to be one. The second part of triangle is Goethe, the Russian scientist, who wants to tell something to the world but not through the spies. And the third part is Katya, loved by both Goethe and Barley, who doesn't even know what is she doing and where does she fit in the whole scheme of things. And in the background are the spymasters of UK and USA who think they have all the strings in their hands but have totally ignored the fact that human nature is an essential part of all the espionage equations.
You've got to read the novel to know the whole thing. And if you are into serious fiction, you must read "The Russia House".

Humanistic thought-provoking tale of the unlikely spy

Firstly, one does not pick up a John Le Carre book to be dazzled with the flash-bang imagery of modern spy thrillers. John Le Carre writes 'spy literature', a look at the inner workings and emotions felt by his well fleshed-out characters in the espionage trade. Like meeting a life-long friend for the first time, you come to know his characters, and if patient enough, actually care about them. His prose often borders on poetry.
I offer this warning of style for the sake of saving time for those looking for a quick pulse-quickening read. On to my opinion of "The Russia House". Barley Blair, the inner hypocrite comes clean. The book is an in depth tale of how a lackluster publisher with a penchant for self-destruction and jazz finds himself deeply embroiled in the hopeful defection of a Russian scientist, Goethe. Blair bumps into Goethe at a chance gathering during the hopeful glimmer of glasnost. Goethe overhears Blair's recited philosophical rhetoric for a hopeful future between the West and Communist Russia. The conspiracy begins.
Le Carre steers us through how a communique meant for Blair is intercepted, where essentially we begin our journey. We are led through London, Moscow, an island off the coast of New England, and Leningrad in the attempt to confirm Blair in his new job of spy and get the elusive scientist to switch sides. However, Blair wasn't expecting to fall in love with Goethe's emmisary, and a whole new tasteful spin is added to the spy novel. Le Carre's characters here are equally intimate and distant, illuminating yet shrouded in secrecy...so very human. So, not to spoil the intricacies for the eager reader, I shall conclude explaining the plot here.
Through all of this, Le Carre gives us a glimpse of life for both the Westerners and Easterners in Communist Russia. The lingering shadows of Stalin and Breshnev are never dismissed lightly, but rather the hope that was glasnost shines on through the murky depths of intrigue.
Fans of the George Smiley books may find themselves disappointed with reading "The Russia House", but I think fans of Le Carre as the storyteller and writer will be very satisifed.

Bang on target

Although some elements of this book may not seem overly realistic to the more discerning specialists of espionage, the general story line is believable. Being a native of Moscow, I enjoyed the masterful, if oversimplified, descriptions of things Russian. Le Carre diction is particularly pleasing -- his mastery of the English language is superb. The text flows easily; it is hard to put the book down. I highly recommend the book to anybody who wants to get a sence of intelligence operations, the difference between US and British apporach to espionage and what Russia was like in the 1990s. Additionally, readers will enjoy Le Carre's masterful command of English -- "an example to us all," as one of his heroes points out. I love this book!
